According to AP News, the nation’s recent surge in infections and deaths seemed to plateau earlier in the week, but “the national coronavirus task force said Saturday that a record 1,241 people died from the virus over the past day, two more than the previous record reported on Wednesday.” Less than 40% of Russia’s population (146 million) have been fully vaccinated, even though a domestically developed COVID-19 vaccine was approved in the country months before most of the world. The country’s coronavirus task force reports there have been more than 254,000 deaths due to COVID-19, the highest death toll in Europe. Russia’s official death toll doesn’t take into account excess deaths, but the national statistics service, Rosstat, has quietly releases total mortality data each month. This allows independent researchers and journalists to tabulate excess deaths for Russia during the pandemic. The mortality data released so far shows that Russia suffered 340,000 more deaths in 2020 than in 2019. For the first five months of 2021, there were 133,000 more excess deaths. Parliament is now looking at legislation that would restrict access to many public places as well as limit travel via trains and air to “those who have been fully vaccinated, have recovered from COVID-19 or are medically exempt from vaccination.” Read the full report here.
