It’s June 1st, folks! Pride Month 2025 is here!
A little history lesson: the month-long global observance began with Gay Pride Week in late June 1970, a year after the infamous police raid at New York’s Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969.
That first Pride Week featured marches in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. Boston joined the lineup in 1971, Dallas and Philadelphia in 1972, Seattle in 1974, and on and on.
At the same time, gay Pride celebrations also became a global event. London’s debut event was in 1972, Sydney in 1978, and Montreal in 1979.
The first WorldPride event was held in Rome in 2000, and Washington, D.C., is the host city this year.

Gilbert Baker, a veteran in San Francisco, created the original rainbow Pride flag in 1978. The flag’s colors were inspired by Judy Garland’s iconic song, “Over the Rainbow.” And each color holds a particular meaning according to Baker.
Red = Life Orange = Healing Yellow = Sunlight Green = Nature Indigo = Serenity Violet = Spirit
I opened my social media this morning and was very pleased to find tons of Pride Month salutations. Here are just a few. Get your Pride on, folks!
