Don’t Miss The 74th Annual Tony Awards Tonight

After a two and a half year absence (thank you COVID) Broadway’s biggest night – the Tony Awards – returns to celebrate the best of the Great White Way. At 7pm ET/4pm PT, six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald will host the American Theatre Wing’s 74th Annual Tony Awards on the Paramount+ app.  The winners in all but three categories- Best Play, Best Revival of a Play and Best Musical – will be announced during the streaming extravaganza. Then, from 9-11pm (live ET/delayed PT), Tony and Grammy Award-winner Leslie Odom, Jr. will host The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back! on CBS. This portion of the evening will feature special performances from the three TONY-nominated Best Musical contenders (Jagged Little Pill, Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) followed by the live presentation of three Tony Awards, including Best Play, Best Revival of a Play and Best Musical. Plus, the special will bring the excitement of Broadway to viewers through a live concert event featuring superstar Broadway entertainers and Tony Award winners re-uniting on stage to perform beloved classics and celebrate the joy and magic of live theatre. I’ll only make one prediction for tonight: Aaron Tveit, as the only nominee for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, will definitely be taking home a Tony. I’d love to see The Inheritance win for Best Play. I was able to see it shortly before Broadway shut down and it was an incredible, moving re-imagining of E.M. Forster’s masterpiece Howards End as a modern-day gay-themed drama. Translated to 21st-century New York, The Inheritance asks how much we owe those who lived and loved before us, questions the role we must play for future generations, and dares us to fearlessly hold on to the wild ride called life. This clip shares the final moments of Part One of the play. The inherent emotion is palpable. https://youtu.be/faqVPafnhpc The only nominated musical I was able to see before Broadway went dark was Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which I did enjoy muchly. Here’s the show’s performance on Good Morning America back in February 2020. https://youtu.be/HTbPslvdYa8
