Louisiana: Democrat John Bel Edwards Wins Governorship Over Sen. “Diaper Dave” Vitter

A little known conservative Democrat has surprised many by winning the governor’s race in deep red Louisiana.

With 56% of the vote, State Representative John Bel Edwards bested U.S. Senator David Vitter in a runoff election on Saturday to become the next governor of Louisiana.

From the New York Times:

A more promising red state Democrat could hardly have been found than Mr. Edwards, a Catholic social conservative from a family of rural law enforcement officers who graduated from West Point and served eight years of active duty in the Army.

Mr. Vitter, for his part, was a problematic candidate for Republicans, even though he had been widely seen as the favorite for months. A prostitution scandal from 2007, the baggage of an unpopular Republican incumbent, Gov. Bobby Jindal, and a series of state political foes with long memories dragged Mr. Vitter down before an Oct. 24 primary. He never recovered.

Vitter told supporters last night that he will not be running for reelection for his Senate seat in 2016.

Aussie Bobsledder Simon Dunn Covers Pitbull & Ke&ha “Timber”

Aussie bobsledder Simon Dunn is a busy man: training for the Olympics, plays rugby for the Sydney Convicts, and now giving us backwoods remakes of music videos.

Check out the hunky athlete resplendent in his Calvins, cowboy boots and hat as he parodies Ke$ha and Pitbull’s “Timber.”

Clearly the man know how to handle wood.

Regular readers of The Randy Report will remember when I interviewed Billy Porter (who I’ve known for over 20 years) for The Candi & Randy Show back in the summer of 2012 when I was choreographing a production of Sweet Charity in Oklahoma and Billy was appearing as our “Daddy Brubeck.”

Billy had just finished the first workshop of Kinky Boots and was headed to Chicago for the out-of-town tryout. He knew then the possibility that was ahead.

You can listen to the interview below.

Congrats Billy on a triumphant run! xoxo

That Time When Adele Won An “Adele Look-Alike” Contest

When I was working with Carol Channing on Broadway in Hello, Dolly!, she used to tell us a story of being on tour in San Francisco on Halloween, and she was told about a Carol Channing look-alike contest. She thought it would be funny to enter.

So she did. And came in 3rd.

I think of that as Adele attempted a similar bit in this clip from the BBC last night. Adele entered a contest as a nanny named “Jenny.”

Her comments with the other girls backstage are priceless as she admits that “she” would probably really like one of the contestants performance, and another time when someone notes the use of her hands.

The final touch was a last minute onstage “nervousness” that causes her to start her song again.

But the minute she begins singing, the other girls knew. And it’s fabulous.

UPDATED: Donald Trump Favors Implementing Database To Track American Muslims

Yesterday, in an interview with Yahoo News, Donald Trump said he favors increased surveillance of American Muslims, forcing them to carry special I.D. cards, and implementing a database that would track those citizens.

“We’re going to have to do things that we never did before. And some people are going to be upset about it, but I think that now everybody is feeling that security is going to rule,” Trump said. “And certain things will be done that we never thought would happen in this country in terms of information and learning about the enemy. And so we’re going to have to do certain things that were frankly unthinkable a year ago.”

Yahoo News asked Trump whether this level of tracking might require registering Muslims in a database or giving them a form of special identification that noted their religion. He wouldn’t rule it out.

“We’re going to have to — we’re going to have to look at a lot of things very closely,” Trump said when presented with the idea. “We’re going to have to look at the mosques. We’re going to have to look very, very carefully.”

UPDATE: Now, Trump says he never endorsed use of a Muslim-tracking database. Except, he did. Check the video above at the :20 mark – “Oh, I would certainly implement that.”
