President Obama: I Will Support SCOTUS Nominee To The End Of My Term

In his first appearance on Fox News Sunday since being elected president, Barack Obama addressed the blockade in the Republican-controlled Senate currently stalling a consideration of his Supreme Court nominee, D.C. circuit judge Merrick Garland.

Via Talking Points Memo:

“I think there’s no doubt that Democrats and Republicans have gotten into a fix inside the Senate in which the confirmation process becomes too much of a tit-for-tat or becomes politicized,” Obama said on “Fox News Sunday.” “So I don’t object to Republicans saying, ‘look, Merrick Garland may be a fine man. He may be an excellent judge. But I just disagree with him philosophically on a whole range of issues so I’m going to vote against him.'”

Obama also said he believes if the confirmation process would occur, Republicans would see Garland’s outstanding qualifications and vote for him.

When asked if he would support Garland through the end of his term, Obama unequivocally said “yes.”

Cyndi Lauper: We Need To End LGBT Youth Homelessness

Cyndi Lauper pens this essay on LGBT youth homelessness for The Advocate:

It’s an election year and there’s a lot of talk about what our nation’s priorities need to be for the next four to eight years. What we have to make sure is not forgotten is the epidemic of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth homelessness. Up to 40 percent of homeless youth identify as LGBT, yet fewer than 7 percent of kids nationwide are LGBT. That discrepancy is outrageous, and it’s something we can’t ignore. That’s why, on April 27, 2016, we will raise our voices for #40toNoneDay: a national day organized by the True Colors Fund to raise public awareness about LGBT youth homelessness.

While family rejection is the most commonly cited reason for LGBT youth homelessness, it’s just one piece of the puzzle — a very big puzzle. We need to make sure we’re seeing the whole picture.

People often think that because they don’t work at a homeless shelter, they don’t have a role to play. The reality is: everyone can make a difference! Think of it this way: Kids experiencing homelessness come into contact with more than just the good folks working at shelters. They also go to coffee shops and libraries. They ride the bus. They’re on the Internet. You may interact with them on a regular basis without even realizing it. We all need to put our heads together to make sure these young people can get support wherever they go — and be themselves when they get there.

Right now people all across America are making a difference. A 24-hour diner owner in North Carolina is giving kids a place to stay when they have nowhere else to go. A library in Indiana is letting kids without a permanent address use computers to access lifesaving resources. In Minnesota police officers are using an app developed by the community to help kids find shelters with available beds. There are many more possibilities that have yet to be explored. That’s why we need to keep the conversation going.

Youth are our future, but they’re also our present. We need to make these kids our priority now. If we don’t, where will they be in five, 10, 20 years? Where will our country be? Even if we all agree that ending LGBT youth homelessness needs to be a priority, how can we rise above the noise and make our message heard? Our voices are stronger when we say something together. Last year, #40toNoneDay reached more than 17 million people. How many more can we reach this year?

Steven Van Zandt On Cancelled North Carolina Concert: Economic Impact Is All The Haters Understand

E-Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt spoke to the Associated Press after Bruce Springsteen and the band canceled their North Carolina concert due to the state’s new anti-LGBT law, HB 2.

From Rolling Stone:

“We just felt the issue was just too important,” Van Zandt said. “This really vile and evil discrimination is starting to spread state to state and we thought, ‘We better take a stand right now and catch it early.’”

“It’s unfortunately the only way people understand. You have to hurt them economically in order to have them do the right thing morally, unfortunately,” the guitarist said, adding that he hoped Springsteen’s efforts in the state would “set some kind of example for others.”

Out Music: Alex Newell “Kill The Lights”

Glee star Alex Newell continues on his march to “dance diva-hood.”

Newell offers up this disco-fueled dance track, Kill The Lights, featuring legendary producer Nile Rodgers on guitar.

The track will be featured this weekend on HBO’s Vinyl as the show’s timeline moves into the disco era.

I have to say, I couldn’t sit still listening. This will definitely be a hit at the clubs. Great song to get your Saturday going.

Bruce Springsteen Cancels North Carolina Concert To Stand With LGBT “Freedom Fighters”

Bruce Springsteen cancels North Carolina concert over attack on LGBT rights

Bruce Springsteen proves, once again, that he is The Boss.

From his official website:

As you, my fans, know I’m scheduled to play in Greensboro, North Carolina this Sunday. As we also know, North Carolina has just passed HB2, which the media are referring to as the “bathroom” law. HB2 — known officially as the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act — dictates which bathrooms transgender people are permitted to use. Just as important, the law also attacks the rights of LGBT citizens to sue when their human rights are violated in the workplace.

No other group of North Carolinians faces such a burden. To my mind, it’s an attempt by people who cannot stand the progress our country has made in recognizing the human rights of all of our citizens to overturn that progress. Right now, there are many groups, businesses, and individuals in North Carolina working to oppose and overcome these negative developments. Taking all of this into account, I feel that this is a time for me and the band to show solidarity for those freedom fighters.

As a result, and with deepest apologies to our dedicated fans in Greensboro, we have canceled our show scheduled for Sunday, April 10th. Some things are more important than a rock show and this fight against prejudice and bigotry — which is happening as I write — is one of them. It is the strongest means I have for raising my voice in opposition to those who continue to push us backwards instead of forwards.

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band’s April 10th show is canceled. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase.

Out Music: Tegan And Sara “Boyfriend”

Tegan and Sara, Canada’s identical lesbian pop duo, drop this single from their upcoming new album Love You To Death.

The song’s lyrics, “Boyfriend,” evolved from a real-life dating situation Sara had experienced.

From the Billboard review:

The track’s a stadium-shaking hand-clapper from the twin duo’s forthcoming album, Love You to Death. Sara Quin spoke to DJ Matt Wilkinson about the song, explaining the story behind the song: Quin was stuck in a love triangle with a woman who hadn’t dated another woman before and was still seeing a man at the same time.

“I think that’s pretty relatable,” Quin said of the song. “Obviously, being gay, there’s sort of a bit of a gender twist in the song and I get that that sometimes doesn’t seem immediately relatable to everybody, whether they’re straight or whatever. But this idea, you know, that we’ve all been in that situation where we really like someone and we want to make it official and they’re not ready, that’s what the song is about.”

I’m liking the 80s vibe of the electro-pop groove. Fun 🙂

The single is available now, and the full album drops June 3rd. Check it out on iTunes.

Has Paul Ryan Released A Pre-Presidential Campaign Ad?

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has released a new video that has many wondering if it’s a prologue to a possible Republican presidential campaign.

Ryan has repeatedly said he has no interest in being the 2016 Republican presidential candidate should their be no current candidate arrive in Cleveland for the GOP convention without the requisite 1,237 delegates. But many have pointed to Ryan as someone the party could rally to in 2nd or 3rd ballot votes for a candidate.

And this video definitely has a “campaign flavor” to it.

In the video – titled “Politics These Days” – Ryan calls for uniting, not dividing the country.

“What really bothers me the most about politics these days is this notion of identity politics: that we’re going to win an election by dividing people, rather than inspiring people.

“So let’s have a battle of ideas. Let’s have a contest of whose ideas are better and why our ideas are better.”

Obviously I’ve seen dogs swim before, but I’ve never seen them hold their breath, swim down several feet and retrieve something. Amazing.
