State Department Audit Criticizes Hillary Clinton’s Email Practices

An audit by the State Department Inspector General criticized not only former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but also former Secretary of State Colin Powell, for non-compliance over personal email use and preservation.

From NBC News:

“At a minimum, Secretary Clinton should have surrendered all emails dealing with Department issues before leaving government service,” says an audit by the State Department Inspector General, obtained by NBC News.

“Because she did not do so, she did not comply with the [State] Department’s policies that were implemented in accordance with the Federal Records Act.”

The audit found that the non-compliance over personal email went beyond Clinton, and that former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican, also failed to preserve government-related emails when he was secretary of state.

The State Department asked Powell to try to receive relevant emails from his internet provider, but “as of May 2016 the Department has not received a response” from Powell, the audit said.

Indeed, the report’s conclusion cites “longstanding, systemic weaknesses” in electronic record-keeping “that go well beyond the tenure of any one secretary of state.”

Clinton’s campaign spokesman tweeted out this statement:

San Francisco 49ers Say North Carolina’s HB2 is “Is Bad For Our Employees, Bad For Our Fans, And Bad For Business”

In North Carolina for the NFL owner’s meeting, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York did not miss his opportunity to address the recent anti-LGBT legislation passed there.

York met with LGBT advocates, transgender North Carolinians and made a $75,000 donation to Equality North Carolina Foundation to help repeal HB2.

The 49ers CEO also released this statement:

“The San Francisco 49ers are deeply concerned about North Carolina’s recently-enacted House Bill 2, which overturned protections for LGBT people and sanctioned discrimination across the state. HB 2 does not reflect the values of our organization, of our country, or the majority of North Carolinians.

“We firmly believe that discriminatory laws such as HB 2 are bad for our employees, bad for our fans, and bad for business. We believe that HB 2 will make it far more challenging for businesses across the state to recruit and retain the nation’s best and brightest workers and attract the most talented students from across the country. It will also diminish the state’s draw as a destination for sporting events, tourism and conventions, and new business activity.

“Discrimination is wrong, and we believe it has no place in North Carolina or anywhere in our country. As an organization that prides ourselves on being inclusive and welcoming to all, we strongly urge Governor Pat McCrory and the leadership of North Carolina’s legislature to repeal this law in the current legislative session.”

Seth Meyers Takes A Closer Look At The NRA Endorsement O Donald Trump

Seth Meyers, host of NBC’s “Late Night,” takes note of Donald Trump’s flip-flop on gun rights over the years in an attempt to pander to the NRA for the organization’s coveted endorsement.

From International Business Times:

Meyers noted how before entering the presidential race, Trump previously supported an assault rifle ban and expanded background checks — far from the standard Republican unwillingness to disagree with any part of the NRA platform. However, on the campaign trail Trump has been promising that as president he would be unapologetically anti-gun control.

“Trump’s ham-fisted attempts to pander to gun owners were apparently enough to sway the NRA, which announced its endorsement of him Friday,” said Meyers. “You might think, ‘How can an organization that is devoted to defending second amendment rights back a candidate who has been so inconsistent on that issue?’

San Diego Padres Fired DJ Explains How National Anthem Went Wrong With Gay Men’s Chorus

More info today on the very unfortunate incident at the San Diego Padres baseball game this past weekend which left the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus standing center field, and instead of singing the National Anthem as planned, the men heard a woman’s recorded version of the Star Spangled Banner over the PA system.

DJ Artform (real name Art Romero), who felt he had found his “dream job” combining music and baseball, is the guy who made the mistake of pushing that button.

Artform spoke to radio hosts Scott and BR on The Mighty 1090 about the moment and how it all went down.

Via Towleroad:

“One of the worst nights of my life, and everybody else involved unfortunately. I failed to upload the correct anthem for the gay men’s choir and I went to the first thing I had which was from the prerecording from the night before, and unfortunately obviously that was a solo female artist for the anthem and obviously it didn’t fit to the programming of the day.

Artform says he read the label and thought the Chorus file was for another date. What they play are sometimes CDs, sometimes sound files.

“In a moment of panic I went to the first thing I saw that said anthem and unfortunately the female vocal artist is what played over the PA system, and it was an extremely embarrassing moment.

“Those are my mistakes and I own up to them. I hold myself accountable.//My stomach was in knots. I should have intervened. I should have turned it down. There’s a lot of ‘coulda woulda shouldas ‘that we could have done to avoid the incident…my heart was racing. Every second was an hour.”

“There’s a lot of twists and turns on how this thing got perceived and I understand completely about the issues that have been underlying the LGBT community and the gay men’s choir so this is something that I don’t take lightly.

“I spoke to the director earlier this morning and I gave him my personal apology. I’m doing things on my side to be as constructive and proactive with this whole ordeal and dilemma.

“All I can do at this point is show who I am as a man and as an individual and as a DJ and own up to my mistake and let everybody know there was no malintent or discriminatory actions toward anyone that night. I have family members and friends that are part of the community.”

Listening to Artform tell the tale, you do get the sense that he’s very apologetic about the incident. I guess the one thing I don’t get is: why didn’t he just hit the ‘stop’ button?

As many now know, Artform was fired after the game Sunday night, and Major League Baseball has announced there would be an investigation into the debacle.

You can listen to his story below.

Artform also posted this apology to his Facebook page yesterday:

My deepest apologies and sincere regret toward the entire San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus & the LGBT community for the incident that occurred during the National Anthem. It was a very unfortunate mistake but it was just that, an error.

I in no way, shape or form directed any type of hate, bad intent or discrimination towards the Chorus or anyone involved. The incident was not a representation of myself,San Diego & it’s amazing Baseball fans.

I have felt the consequences of my mistake as my dream job has dissolved before my eyes which does not take away that I am extremely sorry for the horrible mistake that occurred. I have family members & friends that are a part of the LGBT community & I have always been a supporter of Equal Human Rights, so it pains me greatly to see that I am being accused of acting intentionally.

As a former high school and college baseball player, I understand the importance of ensuring equality for all in sports and am appalled by some of the negative, homophobic comments made by fans related to the National Anthem incident.

I have reached out to LGBT leaders in San Diego and am currently in discussion regarding a meeting with the Chorus and LGBT leaders personally in order to be as constructive as possible about the error.

I’ve let down my City, my family & everyone who had faith in me.

Once again,I’m truly sorry for this entire ordeal. “DJ ARTFORM”

Today In “How To Waste Time And Money”

I just have to ask, “What is the purpose of this exercise?”

From the Washington Post:

Sanders opted not to request a full recount, which his campaign would have had to pay for. The recanvass would simply lead to a review of voting machine tallies and absentee ballots, to determine whether human error switched any of the reports to the secretary of state. At stake: One delegate from the sixth congressional district, which covers the state capitol in Frankfort and the state’s second largest city, Lexington, and where the initial count found a Clinton lead of just a few hundred votes.

That ONE delegate is really gonna close Hillary’s delegate lead of +280.

There’s a way to exit gracefully, Bernie. There really is.

DWTS Finals: Nyle DiMarco & Peta Murgatroyd’s Freestyle “The Sound Of Silence”

I’ve been pretty obsessed with the passion and charm brought to this season’s Dancing With The Stars by Nyle DiMarco, the deaf, sexually fluid, America’s Next Top Model winner.

During last night’s finals, Nyle and partner Peta Murgatroyd delivered a stunning freestyle dance set to Disturbed’s cover of the Simon & Garfunkel classic, “The Sound of Silence.”

The judges (who awarded Nyle and Peta a perfect score of 30) were effusive with their praise.

Carrie Ann Inaba: “The best dance I have ever seen in 22 seasons” of the show. What was so profound about it is not only do I see a man who wants to prove that he can dance, but I also see a man that is proving he can change the world through dance.”

Bruno Tonioli: “That was beyond dancing, that was a work of art. I have chills.”

Len Goodman: “Well you said that was a dance for deaf people, but that wasn’t. It was a dance for everyone. Nyle, you’re a very special person. And that was a very special dance.”

U.S. Naval Academy: It’s Herndon Climb Time!

(all photos by Dan Zak/Washington Post)

Ah yes, it’s that time of the year when “Plebes,” having reached the end of their first year at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis must climb the lard-laden Herndon Monument and replace an underclassman’s hat at the top of the monument with an upperclassman’s hat.

Only then can they begin their summer.

Dan Zak reporting for the Washington Post:

Last year’s freshman class accomplished the feat in one hour, 38 minutes and 36 seconds.

Chris Bianchi, 19, made a solid run at the top shortly after the first boom of a cannon, signaling 30 minutes had passed.

The tattoo on his back honors his father Kevin, who graduated from the academy in 1985 and died in a helicopter crash in 2003, when Chris was 7 years old, according to the Navy Times.

But, like many before and after him, Chris took a tumble.

After the second boom of a cannon, signaling an hour, Bianchi made a second run at the top.

Bianchi hails from Virginia Beach, Va. His tattoo features his father’s name, the words “God,” “Family” and “Country,” and a chapter and verse from the Gospel of John (“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”). After a couple pushes, he nudged the upperclassman’s hat onto the top.

Bianchi, who is five-foot-three, celebrated before the fall back to Earth. The climb took one hour, 12 minutes and 30 seconds.

Team work!

Nevada’s Jon Ralston Shares – “The Child I Love”

Nevada’s top political reporter, Jon Ralston, shared with the world tonight the journey he and his transgender son, Jake, have taken as a family.

I should preface this by pointing out that Jon Ralston is a tough political reporter. There’s no holds barred when it comes to his reporting. But behind every tough persona lies a human heart. Ralston is no different.

I’d love to just copy and paste Jon’s full post, but I think it’s fair you head over to Ralston Reports to read his beautifully written essay on what is obviously a powerfully personal trek to “here.”

Here is just a few excerpts:

When Maddy Ralston came into this world almost 21 years ago, it was love at first sight.

I cradled her in my arms, my adopted miracle, and couldn’t stop crying. She was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

As she grew up, Maddy eschewed the traditional girly girl stuff. “If you get me a doll for Christmas, I’ll cut its head off,” she once admonished me.

She refused to wear the skirts in the school uniform catalogue, preferring the khaki pants. She became a full-fledged tomboy before high school. She was a stunning, blonde-blue-eyed kid, but she didn’t care. She would rather go sit for hours and fish at Sunset Park than go to the mall with other girls. She told me she wanted to be a boy.

[snip]

Maddy never really talked about what the truth was until junior year. But somehow she had known since she was five, when she eschewed dolls and dresses.

I don’t think I even listened very well when Maddy told me a few years ago she was really a male inside, that she was transgender. Sure, you are, I thought. It’s just a phase, I was certain.

After all, the kid has been through a lot. Her mother had died. She had to switch schools. She had no idea who she was.

But the truth was I had no idea. Or I was in denial.

Slowly but surely, I have come to not just accept it but to embrace it. I have learned a lot about transgender issues through my job. I have read a bit.

[snip]

I admit I sometimes still have a hard time with it all. I look around the house, see the pictures of me with my little girl and my eyes fill with tears. But those memories are forever, and Maddy told me not to take them down, that she cherishes those, too.

Last year, Maddy began talking about transitioning, about having surgery. And about six months ago, Maddy began taking testosterone to begin the process of becoming who she really is.

This week, Maddy went to court, bravely told a judge why she wanted to be a male and wanted her birth certificate changed, too. After the hearing, when it was finally real, when he called me, I don’t think I have ever heard my kid sound so happy. And he wanted the story told.

When I get home later this week, I will see someone officially named Jake Ralston for the first time. And one thing I know for certain: It will be love at first sight.

I want to be clear about my intentions on posting this. Jon Ralston has dealt with this family issue for a long time now. And, in sharing his son’s story, he’s helping countless families who find themselves in a similar circumstance.

I personally have friends who have found themselves unexpectedly learning about “life as transgender” from their children. This is real.

I celebrate Jon and Jake’s openness to sharing their story.

I congratulate Jake on his living life as the person he knows he is.

And send huge kudos to Jon for being the father any son would love to have.

UPDATE: The Washington Post’s Travis Andrews interviewed both Jon and Jake Ralston after Jon’s post went viral. Read more about Jake’s journey here.
