Happy 15th Birthday, Bruno The Wonder Dog!

Bruno the wonder dog

Today, June 16th, is Bruno’s 15th birthday. Bruno, in many ways, is a lot of who I want to be: confident, smart and good-looking. I took the footage from the below video in the first few days he came into my life. I made the video shortly thereafter. On top of his confidence and intelligence, he shows me so much love every day, it’s sometimes hard to believe. I think he’s a better living being than I. In June 2006, he sustained a crippling back injury that left him paralyzed. Michael and I rushed him to a vet who far too quickly suggested we do the unthinkable – I can’t even write the words. I snatched him from the vet and ran him to the only animal surgical center in all of Nevada. Bruno was in surgery within two hours of his accident. Shortly after his surgery, he couldn’t feel his back paws. It was possible he might never walk again. Michael and I steeled ourselves to the reality that we would all face a future of Bruno with “wheels” for his back legs. But fortunately, the next morning feeling slowly came back to his back legs. Over the next many weeks, I lived 24 hours a day with Bruno in our bedroom. He had to be kept quiet to heal, and he’d only be quiet if I sat with him. So – I barely left the bedroom. And when I did, it was for only minutes. Slowly, we introduced him to physical therapy in our bathtub to get him using his legs again. It was slow going. Slow. And a few months later he needed a second back surgery. But it was all worth it. Many times over. Today, Bruno has about 70% use of his legs again. He walks ok; tile floors are not his friend. And he kind of gallops more than runs. But I love him more than I can express. In many ways, I feel he’s my best friend. He’s handsome, confident, and he loves me. And he’s the daddy to our three fourteen year old “puppies,” Tyler, Bandit and Bear. Every morning begins with Bruno in my lap as I check email, begin work on this blog, and start to face the day. Every night ends with me reminding him he’s a super dog. Below are some of my favorite photos of Bruno: as a puppy, with Michael, and a snapshot of every morning with Bruno at my desk. Happy birthday, Bruno.

I always think of this as Bruno’s “headshot” – he was about 3 here.

I can’t believe I’m posting this, but every day starts like this. Always first in my lap, always sleeping on my left arm.

Georgia: Karen Handel Doesn’t Believe Gay Parents Are Legitimate – “Because I Don’t”

Karen Handel (L) and Jon Ossoff (R)

If you happen to live in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District, please get out to the polls in four days, June 20, to make sure HRC-backed Democrat Jon Ossoff wins the congressional seat.

Otherwise, you’ll be stuck with homophobe Karen Handel.

Handel opposed marriage equality, civil unions, domestic partnership benefits and allowing same-sex couples to adopt during her 2010 gubernatorial campaign.

Handel has proudly told reporters that she doesn’t think same-sex parents are as “legitimate” as different-sex parents. Why?

“Because I don’t,” says Handel.

Minnesota: Jury Rules Cop Not Guilty In Shooting Of Philando Castile

Posted without comment.

From Huffington Post:

A jury on Friday found the Minnesota police officer who fatally shot a black motorist during a traffic stop last year not guilty of second-degree manslaughter.

St. Anthony Police Department officer Jeronimo Yanez was charged after he fatally shot Philando Castile, 32, last July. The aftermath was streamed on social media by Castile’s girlfriend, and the incident drew national attention and led to weeks of protests in St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Yanez had testified that he was afraid for his life and that Castile did not follow his orders.

In the courtroom on Friday, people could be heard cursing as the verdict was read, and one woman sobbed. Castile’s mother, Valerie Castile, abruptly left the court after the announcement and before court was formally dismissed.

The shooting in the St. Paul suburb of Falcon Heights, like similar incidents across the United States, fueled public debate about the appropriate use of force by law enforcement against minorities.

Out Country Artists Drake Jensen & Patrick Masse Inspire With Upbeat “Go Your Own Way”

On my latest podcast for The Randy Report, I chat with Canada’s premier LGBT solo country artists, Drake Jensen & Patrick Masse, as they’ve teamed up to record an upbeat country song, “ Go Your Own Way” (not the Fleetwood Mac hit), meant to inspire young people who are bombarded with the message that they are “less than.” The bright pop-country track has a liberating, anti-bullying message for young people in the closet; and also addresses the imaging in social media that perpetuates “perfection,” feeding a narrative that we aren’t good enough. The press release for the single reads, “The fact is we can do something about it. We can go our own way.” After just one week, “Go Your Own Way” has landed on the Top 10 Most Active Indies chart. Jensen and Masse have also launched the “Go Your Own Way” Project on Facebook, a positive, interactive space encouraging folks to share photos and videos expressing how they “go their own way.” It’s a case of Canadian East meets West as Jensen (from Ottowa) and Masse (from Vancouver) team up for to share a powerful, timely message. Throughout the candid interview, both Jensen and Masse are refreshingly frank talking about bullying, collaboration within the LGBT community, the impact of religion on young LGBTs and more that motivated the two to record the country anthem. Noting that bullying is especially rampant during school years for young LGBTs. I asked if either had experienced bullying themselves. “I didn’t get to high school,” said Jensen. “I had a nervous breakdown when I was 15, and I locked myself in my room for six months. My last day of school was a flash mob beating that lasted about roughly a mile with two guys with boards with nails in them, and a crowd of people of about 75 that gathered around and followed while they bashed me. That was the last day. That was grade nine. There was no more school after that.” But the story didn’t end there. “I’ve just recently connected with one of the guys that did that to me on Facebook. It was one of the most surreal things ever, you know? I sent him a message, and I said, ‘I see you have children. I hope they don’t suffer what I suffered at your hands.'” Referring to his ‘Scars’ music video which includes statistics about childhood bullying, Jensen told the man, “Thank you very much, though – you’ve motivated me to do this and help thousands of people.” He says he’s forgiven the man who admitted facing his own demons, saying “the past is the past.” Masse recalls how discussions with co-workers about religion moved him to raise his voice at an early age. “I remember years ago I worked at a big hardware store in Canada called Canadian Tire, and it was one of the first jobs I had out of high school. I was working graveyards; we were doing store audits, and I was with this young girl. Her name was Teresa, and she was a daughter of a pastor, and I was probably the first gay person she ever met.” “We would talk, she’d quote the Bible. She would quote this and quote that, and I said to her, ‘Well, Teresa, what do you think?’ She came back the next night, and said, ‘You know, you’re the first person, Patrick, who’s ever asked me what I think.’ I said, ‘Doesn’t that concern you Teresa? You’re 23 years old, and while there’s great lessons and values in the Bible, you can’t hide behind a Bible and use a Bible to judge other people.” “Jesus only ever judged the hypocrites and the Pharisees in his lifetime,” adds Masse. “He wouldn’t be standing with you. He’d be walking with me because we’re all imperfect people here. It’s exciting to see that there are true Christians out there that are coming around. I think people are realizing people are people and everybody needs love, right? Everybody needs acceptance.” I loved talking with these two great artists. Out Memoir – Janet Mock “Surpassing Certainty: What My Twenties Taught Me”

Transgender advocate Janet Mock chats with People Magazine about her new memoir, Surpassing Certainty: What My Twenties Taught Me.

Here’s an excerpt:

What’s your advice for other trans women as they navigate relationships and romance?

The number one thing is to ensure that they feel safe enough to tell someone their story … It shouldn’t be the responsibility of trans women to disclose to every person that they meet, [that they’re transgender] whether it’s a romantic partner, friend, roommate or coworker… There’s a misconception that trans women are out there deceiving people. We’re not out there deceiving people. We’re not even trying to pass. We’re just trying to be ourselves in a society that has put us into boxes, and has told us that if we don’t fit in those boxes then we don’t belong and we’re not deserving of happiness, of fulfillment, of contentment. [We need to have] agency over who we tell our stories to and whether we want to tell our stories to someone at all.

What did you think of Caitlyn Jenner’s memoir? What is the danger of lumping all transgender stories together?

What’s so great about this time period that we’re in is that we can have Caitlyn’s story, we can have my story, we can have Laverne Cox’s story. We can have a mosaic that shows the complicatedness, the things that overlap. But also I think it challenges us to nullify the notion that there’s a single trans story out there — because there isn’t. [Particularly with Caitlyn Jenner’s experiences], they show that trans folk can be problematic, that trans folk can have conservative ideology and political views that don’t even align with the community that they’re advocating for. For me, as an activist and a storyteller, I’m very centered in ensuring that we show the complicatedness of the human experience that happens to be rooted in my community’s trans experiences.

An excellent read, make sure you check out Mock’s book over at Amazon and other digital download sites.

Trump Boasts About “Very Powerful” Social Media, Inflates Numbers

President Trump decided to puff himself up a bit this morning by boasting about the number of his social media followers.

“The Fake News Media hates when I use what has turned out to be my very powerful Social Media – over 100 million people! I can go around them.”

Unless he is counting the fake accounts that troll for him, Trump is being less than truthful about his social media followers.

Adding up his followers from his two Twitter accounts (@realDonaldTrump and @potus) and two Facebook accounts, his social media totals about 75 million followers.

Twitter:
realdonaldtrump: 32.4 million
POTUS: 18.8 million

Facebook:
Donald Trump: 22.4 million
POTUS: 1.7 million

Total: about 75.3 million, not 100 million.
