Andy Whitfield, “Spartacus” star, dies of lymphoma

Actor Andy Whitfield, the former star of TV show “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” died on Sunday of lymphoma in Sydney, Australia, at age 39, his representatives said.

Whitfield played the indomitable hero Spartacus in the Starz network show when it launched last year.

The actor, whose other credits included the 2010 film “The Clinic” and the 2007 movie “Gabriel,” had to step away from his role on “Spartacus” due to his illness, non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

“On a beautiful sunny Sydney … morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18-month battle with lymphoma cancer,” Vashti Whitfield, his wife, said in a statement.

Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said he was “deeply saddened” by Whitfield’s loss.

“We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in ‘Spartacus’ and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life,” Albrecht said in a statement. “Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace.”

Whitfield was born in Wales and later moved to Australia.

NC Legislature May Vote Today on Anti-Marriage Equality Bill

Today HRC and Equality North Carolina staff and volunteers are pulling out all the stops to ensure that the anti-marriage equality amendment goes down in defeat. The delivery of 45,000 postcards to legislators is underway, as is the delivery of a letter signed by nearly 500 clergy and people of faith. The NC legislature is poised to take up the discriminatory bills this week, and will likely vote today or tomorrow. Should they pass these bills, a constitutional amendment to ban marriage equality will appear on the 2012 ballot.

If you live in North Carolina, your legislator needs to hear from you today. Please contact your legislators right now and urge them to oppose these hateful bills.

UPDATE: North Carolina lawmakers not only started debate, it’s already passed through committee and is on its way to the House floor for a vote.

This morning, LGBT rights advocates in the state say Republicans ushered the bill through the House Rules Committee in less than an hour despite objections from Democrats. The bill could be voted on in the House by day’s end.

Sunday night’s show – “The Trio”

This was the inaugural show for the new talk show I’m co-hosting “The Trio” on blogtalkradio.

Candi (“the veteran talk show host”) and Bill (“the voice”) are terrific co-hosts; we all have different backgrounds and perspectives, so I think it’s a fun reflection of who we are and the country itself.

We have a lot of different perspectives, views and we laugh a lot. Take a listen, and I hope you tune in to the show. The point is to talk, chime in and engage. I encourage you all to call in and be a part of the fun.

New talk show: “Three-way”

Tonight, I’m joining my friends Candi and Bill for a “Trio of good times and fun.” We’ll be hosting our new talk show on Sundays at 11pmEST/8pmPST and Wednesdays at 9pmEST/6pmPST, titled “Three-way.”

I think this adventure will be a lot of fun. My co-hosts and I are all different but have a definite slant for the fun and fearless.

A bit about “the hosts”:

Candi’s write up for the new talk show calls me “talented, quirky and an amazing sense of humor.” Kind words, and I’ll take them.  I hope to contribute some of the entertainment and political perspectives I share on this here blog.

Bill Cockrell – “The Voice” – is our funny sexy daddy with his own unique point of view.

And of course, Candi is the veteran talk show host with a terrific free spirit and lack of fear for any topic. 🙂

Like every day – September 11, 2011

So, here’s my plan for the day.

I’m going to get up, get my coffee, read the news websites with Bruno in my lap – like every day.

Then I’m going to watch 10 minutes of coverage about the anniversary of 9/11. The TV in my office goes off after that.

I’m going to watch and post a youtube video of Bette Midler’s heart wrenching performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings” from the Yankee Stadium Tribute to those lost on 9/11.

I’m going to take just a couple of minutes to think about all this.

AND THEN –

I’m going to work at my computer.

Like every day.

I’m going to tell my husband I love him.

Like every day.

I’m going to go out and spend money at a locally owned small business.

Like every day.

I’m going to enjoy listening to music, and reading some of my favorite writers.

Like every day.

I’m going to be glad I’m still here.

Like every day.

I’m going to enjoy the freedoms I have.

Like every day.

I’m going to try to think of something I can do to make things even just a little bit better.

Like every day.

People didn’t die 10 years ago so we would stop living our lives.  And every day, hour or minute we ‘stop’ means the bad guys win.

So, here’s my plan: reflect, honor, and keep moving forward.

Like every day.

No fear, kids.

Bette Midler – Wind Beneath My Wings – Yankee Stadium 2001

Doing what she does best.

So heartfelt, so honest.

One of the strongest memories I have of trying to resolve the horrible event was Bette’s honest and emotional performance here.

Make sure you get to the 4:30 mark.

I’m not a fan of the “Never Forget” campaign. No one will ever forget – of that, I am certain.

But we are here and it’s important everyday that we remember that; and use the time we’re given.

Forward, kids. No fear.

Diana Degarmo – Don’t Cry Out Loud

First let me say I’m not the biggest American Idol fan in the world. Back in the day, I watched a bit, but eventually just about every TV show loses my interest.

But I clearly remember being surprised by 16 year old Diana Degarmo (who almost beat out Fantasia for the title) with this performance of “Don’t Cry Out Loud.” It was her best performance of the 3rd season, and had her final performance equaled this one, she may have won.

Since American Idol, she’s gone on to star on Broadway in “Hairspray” and “Hair” as well as the national touring companies of the Broadway musicals “9 To 5” and “Brooklyn.”

Just think about being 16 years old and knocking this out on TV for a huge national audience. I’m still impressed.
