Maryland Delegate Sam Arora ducks voting on marriage equality

Via Americablog Gay: The marriage equality bill in Maryland took a big step last night by passing in the House Judiciary Committee.

However, Delegate Sam Arora, who ran as a pro-equality candidate and purports to be a progressive, is acknowledging his conversion to homophobia. Sam Arora did not vote last night on the bill.

Two years ago, when Sam Arora was a candidate for delegate in Maryland, he wanted the endorsement of Equality Maryland. He filled out the questionnaire, which we’ve posted below.  Arora even added an impassioned addendum. He also did an in-person interview with Equality Maryland. From every indication, he was a strong supporter of LGBT equality, including marriage. In the general election, Arora got the endorsement of Equality Maryland.

I would encourage members of the Maryland LGBT community to ask why he has disappeared on issues important to the community when he vigorously courted our support. Contact info is below.

Santorum leads Romney in Michigan

Rick Santorum is now leading Mitt Romney in Romney’s home state of Michigan.

The Public Policy Polling survey found Santorum leading Romney, 39 to 24 percent, among likely GOP voters in Michigan — the state where Romney was born and where his father served as governor.

Santorum, hot off three primary and caucus wins last week, also rocketed to the front in national polls.

A Gallup poll released yesterday showed Rick Santorum with 30 percent support nationally, in a statistical tie with Romney, who had 32 percent.

Apple’s stock hits $500 a share

Apple’s stock topped $500 for the first time on Wall Street even as a probe started looking into work conditions at a Chinese factory that cranks out the California company’s coveted gadgets.

Apple shares gained 1.86 percent during the day, powered by reports a new iPad may be unveiled next month, to close at $502.60 and then inched up more in after-hours trading.

Despite the investigation into labor practices, Apple also continued to show its strength with consumers, dethroning Google in the annual Harris Poll RQ study as the company with the most respected image in the eyes of consumers.

The maker of iPhones, iPads, iPods and Macintosh computers got the highest score ever seen in the survey, which asks people to rate the reputations of 60 of the most well-known US companies.

Rick Santorum campaigns against marriage equality in Washington state

From The Advocate: Rick Santorum spent Monday campaigning in Washington state, where primary voters head to the polls March 3 and where Gov. Chris Gregoire signed into law a marriage equality bill during an exuberant ceremony yesterday at the state capitol.

During his swing through the state that President Obama carried in 2008 with 57.5% of the vote, Santorum met with a group of conservative religious leaders in a closed-door meeting to push for repeal of the marriage law, which is scheduled to go into effect June 7.

“We have a serious issue about trying to get moms and dads to marry and stay together,” Santorum told the Seattle Times. “I don’t see this as encouraging that. I think that at least from my perspective it tends to water down marriage instead of encouraging men and women to form healthy marriages, and that to me should be the objective of the government because that is in the best interests of our society.”
