Chris Kluwe: Out Of Bounds blog #11 “Stand Up”

Excerpt from Minnesota Vikings’ Chris Kluwe’s blog post “Stand Up”:

Every time you propagate the message that being gay is to be less than human, that same sex marriage cannot be as filled with love and laughter and tears as heterosexual marriage, that gays don’t deserve to pass a legacy on to their family, you quicken that howling storm and sweep away a tiny bit more humanity from the world, drive one more child to contemplating the cold razor’s bite, or the yawning abyss of the overdose because they simply cannot deal with the unceasing assault upon their psyche.

Well I, for one, will not stand for it. I will not stand for a world that demeans those it finds ‘different’ or ‘gross’. I will not stand for an ideology that promotes slavish adherence to a single arbitrary standard, that sacrifices children on the altar of oppression and control. I will not stand for one more RED TINGED MUSHROOM CLOUD second of people thinking that they have the right to live someone else’s life for them, for the complete lack of empathy so often shown in our society.

I stand for gay marriage. I stand for the end of segregation. I stand for a woman’s right to vote. I stand for equality under the law, for treating others how I want to be treated, for the fundamental human right to live a happy life free of tyranny.

I stand for my children.

Chick-Fil-A agrees to stop donating money to anti-gay groups

According to ChicagoPhoenix.com, Chick-Fil-A has agreed to stop donating money to anti-gay hate groups.

The company has donated millions of dollars to anti-gay hate groups in the past including The Family Research Council.

WinShape, the non-profit organization funded by Chick-Fil-A, released this statement to their shareholders and employers:

The WinShape Foundations is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas–treat every person with honor, dignity and respect-regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender,” and that its “intent is not to engage in political or social debates.”

President Obama on Letterman acknowledges mistake in 2008

President Obama, asked by David Letterman how Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” video compares to his 2008 comments that rural voters frustrated by the economy “cling” to guns and religion, noted that he acknowledged he had made a mistake at the time.

“When you run for president you are under a microscope all the time,” he said. “All of us make mistakes, all of us say the wrong thing once in awhile. You know, that incident in 2008… I immediately said, you know, I regret this. I think it sent the wrong message to the country. So people understand, I think, that you’re going to make mistakes on the campaign trail. What I think people want to make sure of, though, is you’re not writing off a big chunk of the country.”

Romney has reaffirmed his hidden camera remarks, although he’s admitted he made the point “inelegantly.”

Australia upholds gay marriage ban by wide margin

Australian lawmakers have overwhelmingly rejected a bill that would have legalized gay marriage.

The House of Representatives voted 98-42 against the legislation on Wednesday. It was the first of four bills introduced to Parliament that aim to lift the country’s ban on same-sex marriages.

A separate bill was also being debated in the Senate on Wednesday.

Polls show that most Australians support gay marriage. But the Liberal Party-led conservative opposition coalition and many in the ruling center-left Labor Party are against it.

Australian law defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Labor lifted its long-standing opposition to gay marriage last year, but Prime Minister Julia Gillard remains opposed to it.

Mike Ruiz – Pretty Masculine Project app

From the YouTube page: “In his most recent iteration of the “Pretty Masculine” project, Mike Ruiz now delves further into his subconscious. As he continues to explore the inner recess of his psyche, “Pretty Masculine” extends out into the ethos and speaks to the photographer’s digital audience, incarnated as an App. In so doing, we get to enjoy the fruits of his labor in a most palpable manner.”

“This newest effort is more than a continuation of the “Pretty Masculine” printed book. The App is an all-encompassing experience, one that allows us to witness the full scope of the creative process. Through the App, we are able to visit with the artist at work. We are virtually side-by-side at the shoots with the models, learning about their varied and sometimes unexpected interests and goals. We also follow practically every creative step with the makeup and body-painting artists. As we navigate through this experience, we get to meet many of Mike’s collaborators through behind-the scenes-footage and interviews. In some instances, we are also able to see many of the images come to life right before our eyes.”
