Marriage equality votes still being counted in Washington state

From the Washington United for Marriage website: “We feel very good and we are cautiously optimistic. We’re at 65% in early King County returns and we’re out performing in Eastern Washington. We’ll need patience, but the numbers are coming in the right way.”

All Washington state voters have to mail in their ballots.  So it may take a bit to get this all counted.  But it is looking good so far.

Stock market falls on European economy forecasts

With the election over, stock traders’ turned their attention to the European economy, currently being dragged down by a debt crisis for more than three years.

U.S. stock futures were higher overnight after Obama cruised to victory. They turned sharply lower after the European forecasts and discouraging comments from Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank. European markets turned negative as well.

The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, said that it expects the region’s economic output to shrink 0.3 percent this year. In the spring, the group predicted no change.

Now that the U.S. election has been resolved, it’s natural for traders to focus on Europe’s problems, said Peter Tchir, who manages the hedge fund TF Market Advisors.

What they’re tuning in to, he said, is the failure of a major European summit last week and minimal progress on the issues that are holding the region back.

“People can only digest one or two stories at a time, and people had put Europe on the back burner” before the election, he said.

Anti-gay Mayor Janice Daniels fired in Troy, MIchigan

Troy, Michigan Mayor Janice Daniels, who said that gay people are “mentally disordered,” has been recalled by voters.

The former mayor told the press that her anti-gay attitude actually made people want to move to Troy.  Looks like somebody else will be moving instead.

With all 31 precincts reporting, the yes vote won 20,763 to 18,993.

“We’re estatic,” said Matt Binkowski, spokesman for the effort to recall the embattled mayor.

“We’re very happy that Troy can now finally move forward and the embarrassment of Janice Daniels’ short term as mayor is finally over.”

Elixabeth Warren reclaims Dem Senate seat from Scott Brown

Elizabeth Warren is the projected winner of the U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts, reclaiming the Teddy Kennedy Senatorial seat from  Republican Scott Brown.

Boston Herald:

“Over the past year, we built something amazing together,” Warren said in an e-mail to supporters moments after polls closed. “We showed the world that we had heart, that we had guts, and that we were willing to get in the ring and fight for a principle — that together we will build a future of growing opportunities for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren.

The epic battle for the seat drew record campaign contributions from across the country and ended with a mammoth get-out-the-vote effort and hours-long waits at polls across the state.
