Kristin Chenoweth on gays and marriage equality

“I think it is very anti-Christian [to hate gay people]. It is the antithesis of what I believe. It is the antithesis of what you should believe if you believe in Jesus. It’s not what he taught, it’s the opposite of what he taught.

If Jesus was to walk the Earth today, or Buddha or anybody, they would be horrified. Those people saying they’re doing it in the name of God? No no no no no.

I speak as a Christian person, and as a woman and as an artist. I would love nothing more for my friends who love each other to get married.

I don’t think it’s a sin, I think we’re born how we’re born. Look at me, I’m 4’11’’, and so if it was a sin to be short, what would I do? Well I’d just be, you know, it’s how God made me.” – LGBT ally and Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth, in an interview with Gay Star News

EW cover: Matt Damon and Michael Douglas for “Behind the Candelabra”

HBO’s big Liberace movie with Matt Damon and Michael Douglas debuts Sunday, May 26th, but Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive behind-the-scenes look in this week’s issue.

Behind the Candelabra is based on Thorson’s 1988 memoir about Liberace’s over-the-top world of palatial houses, extravagant clothes, and secret affairs. (Liberace never publicly came out as gay before dying of AIDS in 1987.) It’s a world that Douglas actually witnessed first-hand, since his father, actor Kirk Douglas, was once Liberace’s neighbor in Palm Springs. “I remember meeting him just in passing, in his convertible with the top down — his hair not moving,” says the actor, who also got advice from one of Liberace’s close friends, Debbie Reynolds, who plays his mother in the film. “She just told me, ‘[Your voice] can never be too nasal.’”

The movie is also Douglas’ first role since his cancer diagnosis in 2010, and the actor tells EW that beating the disease and returning to acting has been therapeutic for him. “It was great to get back,” he says. “It gave me a new appreciation for what I do, taking advantage of it.”

City councilman faces backlash for sending email alert: “Bryan is gay”

Seriously dumb.

Councilman Matt Staniszewski, of Washington, Pennsylvania, has been reprimanded for sending out an “email alert” through the city’s emergency email alert system that said “Alert: This is a test. Bryan is gay.”

When Mayor Brenda Davis – who questioned why the councilman even had the codes to send an email on the system – addressed the councilman about the issue, he apparently responded that “gay means happy.”

He then went on to admonish the mayor saying “It’s offensive and unprofessional for the mayor to automatically assume one definition of the word when there are multiple definitions.”

Riiiiiight. That’s really what he meant. And now the Mayor is the one in the wrong?

Not thinking so pal.

Watch Jimmy Kimmel goof on the gay.

Here’s a pic of the councilman, who I hear is very gay, which means “very happy” – right?

Olivia Newton-John with the hosts of BBC’s The ONE Show and Billy Bragg

Took a few pics backstage while Olivia Newton-John was doing BBC’s The One Show last night.  It’s always fascinating to me how the “magic” happens behind the cameras.  You can watch the episode online by clicking here.  I think the link is good for about a week.

Very nice folks there. Olivia really enjoyed it and even sang with Billy Bragg a bit on “If Not For You.”

The show did a segment on dogs who help firemen sniff out the causes of fires. The dogs were adorable and of course, Olivia had to say “hello” to them.

Did I mention they had wine in the green room?

Sweet!

Report: Political support for marriage equality not so “career-ending”

From Third Way comes a new report today indicates that supporting marriage equality is not quite the “career-ending move” Brian Brown of the anti-gay NOM would have you believe.

Of the 196 legislators who voted for marriage equality in either New York or Washington, 191 kept their jobs.

Crunching the numbers that works out to a 97% reelection rate.

Historically, 10% of incumbents usually lose reelection, so if anything marriage equality appears to help make the case.

Valerie Harper diagnosed with terminal brain cancer

Very sad news. So many friends of mine speak very, very highly of her.

People Magazine reports:

The television icon – beloved for her role as brash New Yorker Rhoda Morgenstern on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off, Rhoda – received the news on Jan. 15, she reveals to PEOPLE in this week’s exclusive cover interview.

A battery of tests revealed she has leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a rare condition that occurs when cancer cells spread into the fluid-filled membrane surrounding the brain. Her doctors say she has as little as three months left to live.

Resolved to face her last days with courage and humor, “I don’t think of dying,” says the actress, 73, who previously battled lung cancer in 2009. “I think of being here now.”
