Carly Rae Jepsen – “No” to the Boy Scouts, “Yes” to the White Party

Carly Rae Jepsen, the “Call Me Maybe” singer, dropped out of the Boy Scout jamboree earlier this month because the organization bans out scouts and leaders.

HOWEVER – she did say ‘yes’ to headlining the White Party T-Dance.

Jeffrey Sanker’s website made this announcement: “This isn’t a maybe, it’s official! White Party Palm Springs producer Jeffrey Sanker announced to today that “Call Me Maybe” superstar Carly Rae Jepsen is performing LIVE at the Sunday T-Dance, happening Sunday, March 31.”

The T-Dance is one of the highlights of the enormous gay bacchanal, held every spring in Palm Springs, Calif. Jepsen will be joined by singer Icona Pop and performer Carmen Electra for the T-Dance.

Jepsen is certain to be greeted warmly by the crowd. Watch her latest video, for “Tonight I’m Getting Over You,” below.

Finland: Marriage equality supporters successfully gather signatures needed to send issue back to Parliament

Early this month Finland’s marriage equality bill died in committee. However – the public was not happy with that result and have taken action:

A drive to gather the 50,000 signatories required to take a gender-neutral marriage bill to Parliament reached its target in just one day. The accumulation of the required support means that lawmakers must now consider a bill which was previously blocked at the committee stage.

Members of the public rushed to support the “I Do 2013” campaign, which was launched Tuesday to gather the 50,000 signatures required to compel parliament to consider legalising same-sex marriages. Public enthusiasm for the petition was so great that the civic proposal website crashed as a result of the overwhelming demand.

Finland is the only Nordic country that does not recognize same-sex marriage.

Wingsuit diving between buildings in Rio de Janeiro at 6am

Towleroad shares this amazing video of two men flying between buildings in “wingsuits” like something out of a Batman movie:

Ludovic Woerth and Jokke Sommer dive from gliders into Rio de Janeiro, landing in a park behind the 38-story Ventura Corporate Towers after flying between its double skyscrapers (at the top of the image below).

Wrote Sommer: “Ludovic and I doing a wingsuit flight into Rio de Janeiro. We did not have permission to fly into the city, but to respect the commercial air traffic we did the jump 05:45 in the morning. The first flights arrive at 06:05.”

Pretty scary but cool at the same time.

Would a positive SCOTUS ruling on marriage equality be a blessing for the GOP?

A lot of smart political writers are coming to the same conclusion that a ruling in favor of marriage equality by SCOTUS would actually be a favor to much of the Republican party. The thinking seems to be that many GOP pols are “trapped” in toeing the party line but would much rather move on from a subject whose future seems clear.

Note two recent but separate essays by Michelangelo Signorile and Josh Barro. Both smart guys, both know the subject and politics well.

First, from Michelangelo Signorile, writing for the Huffington Post.

“Are GOP leaders secretly hoping that the Supreme Court, after it hears arguments on marriage equality next week, rules in favor of equality? That’s certainly what a few were saying at the Conservative Political Action Conference last week, though not for attribution. [snip]

“The remark this week from Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus that it is kind of ok now for Republicans to support marriage equality — or at least that they wouldn’t be thrown under the bus — combined with Scott Walker’s mixed messages on the issue, Rick Santorum’s continued belligerence, Marco Rubio’s defensiveness (opposing gay marriage “does not make me a bigot”) and Senator Inhofe’s sheer speechlessness underscore that the GOP is in turmoil on the issue.

“The GOP’s only hope, it seems, is for the Supreme Court to take the issue off the table entirely. It’s ironic (and grotesque) that the party that has been the most vociferously anti-gay, the party that brutally attacked LGBT people for decades and exploited homophobia for political gain, may be praying that the justices next week begin the process of giving gays full equality.”

And then from Josh Barro writing for Bloomberg News

“A Supreme Court decision imposing gay marriage nationwide will not only make this problem go away, but it will also give Republican politicians a useful scapegoat to impotently shake their fists at. They can say they wish they could continue the fight against gay marriage, but alas, those judicial activists at the Supreme Court have made it impossible. And then, gradually, everyone who cares about stopping gay marriage will grow old and die, and we can stop talking about the issue.

[snip]

“Gay marriage opponents are going to lose the fight; the only question is whether they will lose it in a way that is quick and painless or long and ugly. If Anthony Kennedy or John Roberts vote to strike down all the state bans on gay marriage, Republicans will be furious with them, but the justices will in fact have done the party a huge favor.”

Super awesome 12 year old writes to Supreme Court Justice Roberts about Prop 8

Daniel, the 12-year-old son of the Leffew Family in Northern California, wrote an amazing letter to Chief Justice Roberts about the Prop 8 and DOMA cases, after reading that Roberts has two adopted children of his own.

From the YouTube description: “So our kids know that Prop 8 is coming to the Supreme Court soon and that could be a very big deal for our family. When they found out that one of the Justices hearing the case had two adopted children, they said, “Hey! They’re just like us!”…and so, in a moment that made his dads very proud, Daniel decided to write a letter to Justice Roberts in the hopes that he will see that our families are not so different.”

Daniel, suffering from a genetic disorder affecting the left side of his face, urges Roberts to strike down California’s Proposition 8. He says his fathers provided him and his sister with a wonderful life when no one else wanted to, and their family should be treated no differently than others.

Hearing Daniel read his letter is pretty powerful. These dads are doing a great job raising their family.

Last week National Organization for Marriage Chairman John Eastman made some particularly ugly comments regarding Justice Roberts and his family by calling adopted children “second-best”.

Poll: Support for marriage equality at all-time high

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll reveals that support for marriage equality is now at 58% – a new high:

• The poll shows that 58 percent of Americans now believe it should be legal for gay and lesbian couples to get married; 36 percent say it should be illegal. This is almost a complete reversal of public attitudes a decade ago: in 2003, 37 percent favored gay nuptials, and 55 percent opposed them…

• Among young adults age 18 to 29, support for gay marriage is overwhelming, hitting a record high of 81 percent in the new poll. Support has also been increasing among older adults, but those aged 65 years old and up remain opposed, on balance: 44 percent say same-sex marriage should be legal; 50 percent say illegal…

• A slim majority of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents under 50 years old now support gay marriage. Nearly seven in 10 of those aged 65 and up oppose it, although that is down from more than eight in 10 just four years ago.

• In addition, the belief that being gay is a choice seems to be fading; only 24% think people choose to be gay.
