Trailer: “The Butler”

Last September Oprah published the above photo to her Instagram account from the set of The Butler, which she was filming at the time. With her are the film’s director Lee Daniels (Precious), Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan, and Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan.  The cast also includes Cuba Gooding Jr, John Cusack, Robin Williams, and more huge stars.

The film is based on the life of Eugene Allen who served eight presidents as the head butler at the White House from 1952-1986.

Just take a look at the trailer. This is clearly something I will not be missing… 🙂

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week and around the country thousands of communities are taking time out to honor local educators and acknowledge the crucial role our nation’s teachers play in making sure every student receives a quality education.

Make sure you say “thank you” to a teacher who has made a difference in your life.  Way under paid, but make way more than their share of a difference, we can’t say thank you enough to great teachers.

Minnesota: Marriage equality coming soon?

As we are still celebrating the passage of marriage equality in Delaware, Minnesota is on a fast track to same-sex marriage and could bring equality to the state by Sunday.

TwinCities.com reports on Thursday’s vote in the state House:

House Speaker Paul Thissen, DFL-Minneapolis, said he believes the 73-member DFL majority has the 68 votes needed to pass the bill allowing same-sex couples to wed, even without a single Republican vote.

As of late Tuesday, no GOP House members have said publicly they would vote “yes.”

Meanwhile, Senate Democratic leaders say they also have the votes to pass a same-sex marriage bill, and DFL Gov. Mark Dayton says he’ll sign it.

If marriage equality passes the House as now expected, the Senate (where it’s approval is also pretty much assured) could vote as early as Saturday.

Quote of the day: Chris Kluwe

Chris Kluwe, NFL kicker and LGBT ally, was cut this week by the Minnesota Vikings after 8 seasons amid talk that his support for the LGBT community was becoming a “distraction.”  In typical Kluwe style, Chris had this to say to the Huffington Post about choosing to play football or speaking out for something he believes in:

“I love football, I love playing football but at the end of the day, it is a children’s game that grown men play.

“If I can speak out on something, especially something that affects millions of lives and causes young kids to kill themselves – if I can speak out on that and help one of those young kids realize that you don’t have to take that step, to me that’s worth far more than anything that I could gain from football.

“I think all that we’re asking and all that any athlete is asking, straight or gay, is judge that person by what they can do on the field. Not by who they are, not by what their beliefs are or the color of their skin. Judge them by their playing abilities.”

Charles Ramsey, Cleveland kidnap victims hero: “Take that reward and give it to the victims”

Charles Ramsey became an instant Internet sensation on Monday when he helped free Amanda Berry, Georgina DeJesus and Michele Knight from the house next to his where they had been trapped for around 10 years.

“Bro, I knew something was wrong when a little, pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms,” he told WEWS following the rescue. “Something is wrong here. Dead giveaway.”

When told that there was a reward offered for at least two of the victims, Ramsey declined.

“Just went picked it up, paycheck,” he added, producing an envelope from his pocket. “What that address say?”

“Where are them girls living? Right next door to this paycheck. So yes, take that reward and give it to — that little girl came out the house and she was crying.”
