Mayor in France refuses to marry gay couple

From the Advocate: A mayor in southwestern France refused to marry a gay couple Friday, defying the nation’s newly enacted marriage equality law. But the mayor would consider marrying two women, reports France’s English-language news source The Local.

Claude Binaud, the 77-year-old six-term mayor of Matha, reportedly told Bernard Rouhaud and his partner that he would not issue a marriage license to the couple.

“There’s no doubt, I will not marry them, not two boys,” Binaud told local daily paper Sud-Ouest. “I don’t find [gay marriage] normal. We’re touching on something central to society here — the family.”

But that concern for family is apparently what led the mayor to speculate that he might marry two women, if he were forced to do so.

“Two girls, I might have said yes, if my back was against the wall,” continued Binaud. “But that’s totally different — they can have children.”

Binaud suggested that a town councillor officiate at Rouhaud’s wedding August 3, reports The Local.

But that compromise might not be good enough for national authorities, as France’s interior minister, Manuel Valls, warned mayors last week that anyone refusing to marry same-sex couples will find themselves in violation of the new law, which took effect May 30. Valls was responding to reports that a mayor from another southwestern town had refused to officiate a gay couple’s wedding, and noted that state officials who refuse to marry same-sex couples could face up to three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 Euros for their discriminatory practice that’s at odds with nationwide law.

Acclaimed LGBT blogger Pam Spaulding to end successful 9 year run

Acclaimed LGBT blogger Pam Spaulding announced yesterday that July 1 will be Pam’s House Blend’s final day online after a successful nine-year run.

From her announcement:

“All good things must come to an end, even after numerous awards and accolades, it’s time to acknowledge that I cannot continue to run on fumes alone. The Blend could continue limping along, but my health and well-being come first; over the last few years burning the candle at both ends with a full-time offline job and PHB. It has taken a severe toll—most readers have learned that I am dealing with chronic pain conditions—fibromylagia, and in the last couple of years, aggressive rheumatoid arthritis.

My decision to close the blog is just as reality-based as its content has been. If I cannot produce material at the frequency or with the same level of quality, enthusiasm and effectiveness, it’s really time to close the doors to this coffeehouse—and work to ensure it continues to have a life as an archive, a snapshot in our digital political history.  Pamshouseblend.com will redirect to archives.

Political blogging changed mainstream journalism in many ways. Save for a few who were able to monetize their blogs or who were cherry picked to help traditional outlets get their feet wet in new media, the vast majority of citizen journalists and opinion-makers toiled with little hope of quitting that day job. The LGBT movement was energized by the speed and reach of new media, and at times appeared quite threatened by it—mostly because it was a venue where Beltway orgs, and even the White House, didn’t see any possible way to co-opt or control what was being produced by this first generation of online political rabble rousers and activists. I’ve made a lot of great friends and met a lot of people along the way, and hopefully opened a few eyes, particularly with my posts about the intersection of LGBT and race.

I’ll have a “goodbye” post on July 1 that takes a look at some of PHB’s nine-year history.”

Exodus International leader to apologize for damaging “cure” for homosexuality

For almost 40 years, Exodus International claimed to offer a “cure” for homosexuality. Alan Chambers, the leader of Exodus, decided last year to stop endorsing the controversial practice of gay-reparative therapy. And now, he has a new message: an apology.

In a special episode of Our America, Lisa Ling is joined by a group of survivors of the condemned and damaging practice of “reparative therapy” as they confront Alan Chambers.

Chambers recently asked Ling to help orchestrate an opportunity in which he could formally apologize to those who felt deceived and defrauded by Exodus’ practices and to announce that the organization will cease to be an “ex gay” organization.

Tune in Thursday, June 20th at 10/9c for a special presentation of this powerful report.

Dolce & Gabbana has a new spokesman – soccer star Leo Messi

Soccer star Lionel "Leo" Messi is the new face of Dolce & Gabbana

Barcelona soccer star Lionel “Leo” Messi will be the new face of Dolce & Gabbana.  And for good reason.

Messi is already being called one of the greatest players soccer has ever seen. And on top of that, he’s clearly very eye friendly.  With photos like the one above, I see D&G selling some merch.

I’m getting handsome “every man” mixed with a sports hero theme and great abs.  Works for me!

More photos from Leo’s first shoot can be found here.
