Report: Pete Buttigieg To Endorse Joe Biden For President

Reuters is reporting that former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg plans to endorse former Vice President Joe Biden today for president. This comes a day after Buttigieg ended his historic campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. Sen. Amy Klobuchar also announced she is ending her campaign as well and is reportedly traveling to Texas to campaign with and endorse Biden tonight.

Begala: Trump Will Dump Pence For Nikki Haley

Political strategist Paul Begala’s predicts Donald Trump will dump Vice President Mike Pence for the former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley. Speaking at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s (AIPAC) 2020 policy conference on Monday, Begala told the crowd “it’s a certainty” that Trump will dump Pence. “On Thursday, July 16, that’s the date the Democrat gives his or her acceptance address,” said Begala. “On that day, to interrupt that narrative, Donald Trump will call a press conference at Mar-a-Lago. He’s gonna dump Mike Pence and put Nikki Haley on the ticket to try to get those suburban moms. You watch. Guaranteed.”

Amy Klobuchar Ends Her Campaign For Democratic Nomination

ABC News reports that Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) is suspending her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination and will endorse former Vice President Joe Biden.

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota, has suspended her campaign Monday following an underdog third place finish in the New Hampshire primary and two sixth place finishes in Nevada and South Carolina — two states with substantially more diverse electorates.

The Klobuchar campaign confirmed to ABC News that the senator is flying to Dallas to join former Vice President Joe Biden at his rally Monday night where she will suspend her campaign and endorse him.

Hours before news of her dismal finish in South Carolina, Klobuchar told reporters following a Super Tuesday rally in Richmond, Virginia, that her campaign had been approaching the race “state by state” because of lack of funding.

Pete Buttigieg Ends His Historic Bid For Democratic Nominee For President

Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., who rose from virtual anonymity to become the first openly gay candidate to make a high-profile run for the Democratic presidential nomination, has announced he is ending his bid for the White House.

From the Washington Post:

The development marks an abrupt end to what was briefly an ascendant candidacy, as Buttigieg won the Iowa caucuses and came in second in New Hampshire. But despite attracting enormous attention, significant support and sometimes enthusiastic crowds, there was no clear path forward toward the nomination.

Buttigieg’s decision comes shortly before Super Tuesday, the biggest primary day of the year, at a time when the Democratic race shows signs of becoming a race between Sen. Bernie Sanders and former vice president Joe Biden, with Biden occupying a centrist position that Buttigieg had hoped to make his own.

If there was one vulnerability that felled him, it was his inability to win trust or support from black voters, a key pillar of the Democratic coalition.

After a fourth-place finish in South Carolina Saturday — and results that showed he achieved abysmal levels of support with black voters–Buttigieg consulted with his team Saturday night before flying to Georgia to meet with former President Jimmy Carter Sunday. His campaign scheduled a Sunday night call for donors and did not provide a subject.

By the time all the votes were counted in South Carolina, Buttigieg had only garnered 3 percent of the Black vote in the Palmetto State, according to the Washington Post. Buttigieg is to be lauded that, in looking forward, he saw no path for winning the nomination and understood his leaving the race could benefit former Vice President Joe Biden – another candidate with which Buttigieg shared the ‘moderate’ lane. MSNBC is reporting Buttigieg decided he didn’t want to be the guy to keep a stronger nominee who the Democratic party could rally around from getting the nomination. Many of the talking heads on TV are speculating as to whether the vote-counting debacle in Iowa, which caused the results to be delayed for days, might have muddied his historic achievement and perhaps hurt his candidacy to some extent. Had he gotten the ‘clean win’ would that perhaps have propelled him to besting Sanders in New Hampshire where, instead, he came in second? We’ll never know. Watch an emotional Chasten Buttigieg introduce his husband Pete for his speech to supporters last night.

As an openly gay man, I have to say the Harvard educated/Rhodes scholar has been a more-than-worthy candidate to represent the LGBTQ community in his historic run. Initially seen as a longshot candidate, he ultimately found himself running with the big dogs, going toe-to-toe with U.S. senators with much higher name recognition and decades of experience in Washington, D.C. The “left-handed, Maltese-American, Episcopalian, gay millennial-war veteran” has presented himself well with dignity, poise, and grace. When asked by a nine-year-old supporter for advice on coming out, Pete said “when I was trying to figure out who I was, I was afraid that who I was might mean that I could never make a difference. And what wound up happening instead is that it’s a huge part of the difference I get to make.” I certainly see a bright future for Buttigieg – hopefully in Joe Biden’s administration. On the day of his announcement, I shared this photo on social media writing, “If I tried I could never fully express what THIS really means to me. Every day I celebrate possibilities…” I still feel the same way.

Joe Biden Wins South Carolina Democratic Primary

Within seconds of the polls closing, several networks immediately announced former Vice President Joe Biden as the winner of the South Carolina Democratic primary. Those announcements were based on exit polls, so you know they had to lean heavily in Biden’s favor. Several important demographics went Biden’s way including 60 percent of Black voters, 57 percent of voters 65 or older, 52 percent of moderates and 48 percent who chose on the basis of electability. My questions now are: can Biden win by the 86k votes needed to take the popular vote lead? And can he win by the 30 delegates needed to take the overall delegate lead? Both are possible. I’ll update once the vote count is announced. From here, Biden has to hope to be viable (get at least 15%) in California so Sen. Bernie Sanders doesn’t gain a huge numbers advantage.

Fox Poll: All 6 Democrats Beat Trump In Head-To-Head Matchups

A new poll by Fox News got Donald Trump uber-angry as the results showed all six Democratic candidates beating him in hypothetical head-to-head match-ups. Biden and Bloomberg both beat the Donald by 8 points. Sanders trumped Trump by 7 points. The other three candidates were ahead of Trump but within the margin of error for the poll: Warren (+3 points), Buttigieg (+3) and Klobuchar (+1). In each scenario, however, there are enough undecided/third-party voters to move the race either way. Additionally, 56% of respondents believe Trump will be elected versus 34% who did not. Ten percent were unsure.

Bloomberg Apologizes For Transphobic Remarks

Former NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg (image via campaign)
Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg issued an apology today after video clips of Bloomberg making transphobic remarks had come to light. One of the clips showed Bloomberg referring to transgender people as “he, she, or it” and “some guy in a dress” who could enter girls’ locker rooms at a forum at the Bermuda Business Development Agency in March of 2019. Another video showed the former mayor speaking at Oxford in 2016 describing transgender people as “some man wearing a dress.” The remarks were in reference to why he believed people in the Midwest would not push for greater rights for transgender individuals. Today, Bloomberg said in a statement (via The Advocate):

“Today, I spoke with leaders from the transgender community and have heard from elected officials like Mayor London Breed, and I understand that my words had caused hurt,” he said. (Breed, the mayor of San Francisco, is a cisgender woman but has a large trans constituency.)

“It was a poor attempt to describe how some who oppose transgender equality think about this issue — and those words do not reflect my unwavering support for equality for transgender Americans,” he continued. “I want to offer my sincerest apologies to the members of the transgender community.

“Given the ongoing violence that the trans community faces, including the recent killing of Alexa Ruiz in Puerto Rico, we need a president who will set the moral compass to ensure safety, respect and dignity for all trans people. As mayor, I signed a sweeping transgender civil rights bill and, as president, will promote policies that advance equality for transgender Americans who have been attacked by the Trump administration over the past three years.”

Since entering the race for the Democratic nomination for president, Bloomberg has yet to appear on a ballot in a Democratic primary or caucus. He will also not be on the ballot in the South Carolina primary Saturday, Bloomberg has focused his efforts and considerable cash on ballots next week on Super Tuesday, when voters in 14 states and one territory, along with Democrats living abroad, will vote in local primaries and caucuses. He currently is ranking third nationally in the RealClearPolitics average of polls.

Poll: Joe Biden Leads Democrats By 18 Points In South Carolina

A new poll by Clemson University released today shows former Vice President Joe Biden has an 18-point lead over his Democratic presidential primary opponents in South Carolina. The survey showed Biden has 35 percent support in the Palmetto State just days ahead of the ‘First in the South’ primary on Saturday. Businessman Tom Steyer, who’s been highly focused on South Carolina, placed a distant second in the poll with 17 percent support. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the current delegate leader among the Democrats, trails Steyer in the poll by 4 points. Results from the Clemson University Palmetto Poll: Biden: 35% Steyer: 17% Sanders: 13% Buttigieg: 8% Warren: 8% Klobuchar: 4% Gabbard: 2%

Prominent SC Rep. Jim Clyburn Endorses Joe Biden

Just days before the South Carolina Democratic primary, Rep. Jim Clyburn has endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden. Clyburn is considered one of the most popular politicians in the state. From the Post and Courier:

As South Carolina’s most influential Democrat and the highest-ranking black member of Congress, Clyburn’s support for Biden could hold far more significance than a typical presidential endorsement, boosting him as he seeks to stave off two surging rivals in U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and businessman Tom Steyer in a state where about two-thirds of the Democratic electorate is African American.

Some political observers even dub him the South Carolina Democrats’ “kingmaker.” Clyburn endorsed Hillary Clinton at a similar stage in the 2016 primary. He only endorsed Barack Obama months after South Carolina’s 2008 primary.

Clyburn’s endorsements historically carry the state. Clyburn has also recorded a campaign ad for Biden that will run throughout the state over the next several days.

Village People Are Cool With Trump Campaign Using Their Music?

The Village People, whose disco-tastic hits include “In The Navy,” “YMCA,” and “Macho Man,” have given the green light to President Donald Trump’s campaign to use their songs at campaign events even though fans have urged the band to withhold permission. In a statement posted on their Facebook page, the band shared that they had received “numerous requests” to ban Trump from using their songs, particularly “YMCA” and “Macho Man.” Noting that Trump recently made his entrance at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad, India, on Monday to the 1978 track “Macho Man,” the band told fans they can “no longer remain silent” on the issue. “Since our music is not being used for a specific endorsement, the President’s use is “perfect[ly]” legal,” read the statement. “He has remained respectful in his use of our songs and has not crossed the line; if he or any other candidate were to use any of our songs in a manner that would suggest our endorsement, or in a promotional advertisement, that would cross the line.” The Village People also underscored that their music is “all-inclusive and certainly everyone is entitled to do the YMCA dance, regardless of their political affiliation.”

While Trump has been using “Macho Man” at campaign events since 2018, many have noted the irony in the Donald’s usage of the gay anthem considering his unceasing attacks on the LGBTQ community since he took office. Just a few of the attacks include the president’s anti-transgender military policy, which prohibits transgender people from serving in the U.S. armed forces; the administration’s proposed policy to allow religiously affiliated businesses to turn away LGBTQ people; and attempts to discharge HIV+ soldiers who are healthy and able to serve. Plus, according to Lambda Legal, Trump has nominated dozens of circuit court judges who have demonstrated anti-LGBTQ bias in their careers. While the Village People are cool with Trump using their music, other artists, including Adele, Rihanna, R.E.M., Aerosmith, and Queen, have publicly demanded the Trump campaign stop using their music at his events.
