Dallas ‘Straight Pride’ Event Draws A Crowd Of Two

(photo: Soraya Colli)
The highly anticipated (I’m joking) ‘Straight Pride’ parade/event in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday turned out to be the most epic fail yet for the ‘Straight Pride’ movement. Although the organizers promised discussions of abortion rights (they say it’s murder), traditional marriage (only one man + one woman), and gender identity (only two!!!!), we’re not sure how long those panels were since only two people showed up. According to the Dallas Voice, the two participants weren’t even from Dallas. Or Texas. The duo, presumably a part of Super Happy Fun America which produced the Boston ‘Straight Pride’ event this summer, were vastly outnumbered by approximately 20 protesters who showed up at the City Hall Plaza “event.” Local activist Soraya Colli shared video footage on Facebook and was sharing details via Twitter:

The story was similar on August 31 in Boston where 200 attendees were greeted by thousands of pro-LGBTQ protesters. The second ‘Straight Pride’ event, which was planned to occur in Modesto, California, couldn’t obtain a permit due to lack of insurance and was reduced to a handful of people protesting in front of a Planned Parenthood location. The Dallas Voice reports that one of the straight Pride participants in Dallas yelled insults at transgender protesters saying, “We know there are only two genders.” He also insisted, “I’m part of the oppressed majority.” And when the space between the protesters and the two Straight Pride attendees began to close, police separated them, putting an end to the fireworks. The local organizer of the Dallas event, Teresa Stephens Richenberger, didn’t bother to show up. In a statement posted on Facebook, Richenberger said the event had to be ‘postponed’ due to the city of Dallas “PRICE GOUGING us and asked for enormous amouts [sic] of money.” We’re guessing she didn’t bother to tell the guys from Boston who traveled to the Lone Star state for her shindig? Richenberger went on to say they would “regroup” and set a date for sometime in the future. She closed her post by shouting, “I AM NOT BACKING DOWN; AND NOT RUNNING;;; WE WILL HAVE OUR PARADE/MARCH.” “SOON……” added Richenberger.

Louisiana: Dem Governor Wins 2nd Term Over GOP Trump Ally

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards
Despite three visits by Donald Trump to Louisiana to try and flip the governorship to the Republican column, Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards won a second term Saturday to remain the only Democratic governor in the Deep South. Edwards narrowly beat wealthy businessman and Trump ally Eddie Rispone, who invested more than $14 million of his own money to finance his campaign. “I need you to send a message to the corrupt Democrats in Washington,” Trump told a crowd at a rally in Bossier City on Thursday. “You’ve got to give me a big win, OK?” Trump implored. The Republican National Committee invested $2 million and 60 staffers on the ground in hopes of flipping the seat red. Yesterday, Trump tweeted “Louisiana, 3 hours left, get out and Vote for @EddieRispone for Governor. Lower taxes and much more!” After the news that Rispone had lost the race, and not wanting to be associated with failure, Trump has now deleted the tweet. Trump also recently campaigned for GOP Governor Matt Bevin in Kentucky which resulted in the Democrat, Andy Beshear, winning the race. There will now be two Democratic governors in deep-red South.

CNN Host Explains Ukraine President’s Planned, Then Cancelled, Interview

Apparently, the announcement of an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, by the Ukraine government that Donald Trump sought in exchange for previously promised military aid was to have taken place on Fareed Zakaria’s CNN show, although at the time CNN didn’t know the full backstory. Zakaria told his viewers today he felt he owed them an understanding of what he and his team did and didn’t know as they sought the interview with President Zelensky. It makes sense that Trump’s White House would WANT the announcement on CNN because Democrats watch CNN. Trump wanted as many possible Dem voters to see/hear the allegations to taint support of Biden. It’s worth noting, again, that journalists from across the political spectrum – even Fox News – have repeatedly said there is no evidence of any wrongdoing by Joe or Hunter Biden. Trump just wanted his 2020 version of ‘her emails’ to discourage Democratic voters. Watch below.

Iowa: Pete Buttigieg Jumps To Top Of Des Moines Register Poll

Mayor Pete Buttigieg (image via campaign Instagram)
Ok, the other poll wasn’t an anomaly. The latest Des Moines Register/CNN/Mediacom poll shows Mayor Pete Buttigieg has jumped 16 points since the Register’s last poll to land at the top of the Democratic presidential field. • Mayor Pete Buttigieg 25% • Sen. Elizabeth Warren 16% • Former Vice President Joe Biden 15% • Sen. Bernie Sanders 15% • Sen. Amy Klobuchar 6% From the Des Moines Register:

Since September, Buttigieg has risen 16 percentage points among Iowa’s likely Democratic caucusgoers, with 25% now saying he is their first choice for president.

For the first time in the Register’s Iowa Poll, he bests rivals Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, who are now clustered in competition for second place and about 10 percentage points behind the South Bend, Indiana, mayor.

Warren, a U.S. senator from Massachusetts, led the September Iowa Poll, when 22% said she was their first choice. In this poll, her support slips to 16%.

Former Vice President Biden, who led the Register’s first three Iowa Polls of the 2020 caucus cycle, has continued to slide, falling 5 percentage points to 15%.

Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont, also garners 15% — a 4 percentage point rise.

Those four candidates began to pull away from the crowded field of Democrats and separate into a top tier of contenders in June’s Iowa Poll.

Excitable Baby Dragon Featured In 2019 John Lewis Christmas Ad

UK retailer John Lewis has released its annual Christmas ad for 2019 as a collaboration with its sister chain Waitrose. Set in a fairytale village in Hungary, the short video tells the story of a little girl named Ava and her dragon friend, Excitable Edgar. Using Bastille’s cover of the 1980s hit, “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” the Christmas spot shows Edgar unable to control his excitement about the impending holiday as he accidentally melts a snowman with his fiery breath, defrosts an ice rink where children are skating, and accidentally burns down the town’s Christmas tree. But eventually, Ava discovers a good use for his accident-prone talent — toasting the Christmas pudding. Via press release, John Lewis shares the theme of the advertisement “centers around the theme of bringing people together at Christmas time through delicious food and thoughtful gifts, which show loved ones how much you care.” “Our story this year is all about the magic of friendship and how one thoughtful gesture can make all the difference,” says the retailer. “Edgar’s excitement around the festive season can often lead to fiery consequences, but Ava sparks an idea for the perfect present to help him light up Christmas in his own special way 🔥”

Last year’s ad featuring pop superstar Elton John showcasing the power of a gift received more than 14 million views.

The Donald Threatens Impeachment Could Lead To Depression

Donald Trump took to Twitter today to threaten Americans that impeaching him “would lead to the biggest FALL” in stock market history. Not just a recession, but a depression. Mind you, the stock market tripled during President Obama’s 8 years in office, so, there’s that. And even as the impeachment inquiry continues, the market continues on its way. Wall Street sees whats happening and seems fine with the possibility of impeachment.

How TV Shifted Its Portrayal Of LGBTQs In The 1990s

In this mini-documentary chronicling LGBTQ representation on television, Matt Baume does an excellent job pulling together the LGBTQ shifts in the tele-landscape on 1990s sitcoms. From Baume:

Is there any show more perfectly suited for a gay ’90s romp than Frasier? When the show the first premiered, television often treated gay characters as a source of fear. But by the time Frasier was in its final season, lots of sitcoms were having a gay old time.

Hit play for a trip down memory lane on how the portrayal of gays changed over a relatively short period and why. No one does this better than Matt.

Roger Stone, Former Trump Aide, Convicted On 7 Felony Charges

Roger Stone
Roger Stone, a longtime confidant of Donald Trump, was convicted today in federal court of seven felonies for obstructing the congressional inquiry, lying to investigators under oath and trying to block the testimony of a witness whose account would have exposed his lies. It took jurors barely seven hours of deliberation before convicting him on all counts. Stone faces up to 50 years in prison, although guidelines suggest he’ll receive less than that. From the New York Times:

For decades, Roger J. Stone Jr. played politics as a kind of performance art, starring himself as a professional lord of mischief, as a friend once called him. He tossed bombs and spun tales from the political periphery with no real reckoning, just a reputation as a dirty trickster.

On Friday morning, a reckoning arrived, the consequences of his efforts to sabotage a congressional investigation that threatened his longtime friend President Trump.

Mr. Stone, 67, was convicted in federal court of seven felonies for obstructing the congressional inquiry, lying to investigators under oath and trying to block the testimony of a witness whose account would have exposed his lies. Jurors deliberated for a little over seven hours before convicting him on all counts. Together, the charges carry a maximum prison term of 50 years.

In a last-minute bid for salvation, prosecutors said that Mr. Stone appealed to Mr. Trump for a pardon on Thursday, using a right-wing conspiracy theorist who runs the website Infowars as his proxy. Mr. Trump attacked the guilty verdict against Mr. Stone in a tweet on Friday but made no mention of a pardon.

Stone is the 6th former Trump associate to be convicted in cases stemming from the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.

Semi-Nude Social Media Took This Poet Off The Shelf

Author Ben Kline (via Tumblr)
Ben Kline, a poet, was recently thrilled when he was informed a chapbook of his poetry was accepted for publication. A chapbook is a small book, generally in the range of 20-40 pages. They are a useful format for emerging writers to introduce new work to the world and give voice to writers who may need it. In this day and age of shrinking attention spans, chapbooks are used to showcase top-shelf poetry or short stories in a format that one can finish in a single sitting. Kline’s collection, Sagittarius A*, was accepted, and according to a recent post he made online, he spent a week with an editor from the publishing house discussing edits, release date, cover design and more. He also pulled the chapbook from consideration with two other possible publishers. But then came an odd twist in the tale of Kline’s chapbook, which he shared in an essay on his personal website. Kline writes that he received a disconcerting email informing him a woman in the publisher’s office took a moment to check out his Twitter account. That led to her perusing his Instagram account where he apparently had been posting nearly-nude photos that were usually coupled with poems which “delved into contemporary matters of queer life.” From the email:

Yesterday, a woman at our office did a Google search of your Twitter handle, pinecreekpoet, which led to your Instagram account, which we all saw at the office and mostly didn’t think twice about at first—however, a couple of hours later, we found her seven-year-old daughter crying with her mom’s phone, having seen your entire account. She was very, very upset and confused and upset about all the nudity, and this led to a long talk about what is and isn’t appropriate for an adult to post on a public, family-friendly website and what does and doesn’t fit [our publisher’s] image, especially because we have our first children’s books in the works right now.

The email went on to say the powers that be asked some of the authors on their roster how they would feel being on the same imprint as “someone who has posted hundreds of public nude selfies?” Mind you, Instagram doesn’t allow full-frontal nudes, and most of us have seen the eye-candy/beefcake posts on Instagram… The answer, it appears, is some of the ‘other authors’ (especially women, per the email) felt a “bit creeped out” by the idea. Further, the publisher shared that if the photos were “somehow connected to your career, etc…we’d have no problem with it, but being connected to an author who has posted public nudes/semi-nude photos nearly every day for the last seven years with no obvious reward other than personal satisfaction is something that makes us all feel uncomfortable.” The email closes with rescinding the offer of publishing Sagittarius A*. Kline has since taken his social media private “to avoid them attempting to smear” him with other publication companies.

The story leaves me with some questions. One, how and why did a 7-year-old come upon a phone (don’t these things lock?) with the images readily available? And seriously, what 7-year-old becomes “very, very upset and confused” to the point of crying because of a semi-nude body on Instagram? Again – there are no full-frontal photos on the Insta. Two, what would it matter if a collection of astrophysics-inspired poetry penned by a guy who has posted semi-naked photos on his social media were to be published on the same imprint as a children’s book? Who is going to connect one project of a completely different realm to the other? Three, it would be one thing if Kline were seeking a job in the field of teaching or at a conservative law firm. But poets and poetry cover a wide-ranging world of words and creative thought. Why would his Insta-thirst traps have anything to do with other authors at the publishing house? Kline ends his essay saying he felt offended by the “tone/language/implications” of the email in a homophobic vein. “There are lots of queer poets who have queer and/or sexualized content on their social media,” writes Kline. “My selfies on IG were almost always paired with poems that delved into contemporary matters of queer life. They were not just images posted ‘with no obvious reward other than personal satisfaction.’” Finally, as Kline resumes submitting Sagittarius A* to publishers, I want to share the cover of Kline’s Going Fast In Loose Directions. Surely the image itself, which the publisher had to have come across, was a clue to the writer’s style and predilections?
