A teacher’s response to Rick Perry’s anti-gay campaign ad

Texas Governor Rick Perry is apparently unfamiliar with the bill he signed into Texas law in 2003 mandating a “minute of silence” each morning during which “students may pray”.

Three classroom parties are permitted per year: Christmas, Easter, and the End of the Year. Let’s see… concern over who is fighting for our country and protecting freedom around the globe, or lies about children’s classroom Christmas parties?

Poor Rick Perry. He just doesn’t get it.

Barbra Streisand: Gotta Move from Color Me Barbra

My friend David just posted a clip of Barbra singing this on another TV special, but I’m partial to this one from her very successful TV special “Color Me Barbra.”

I’m telling myself it’s appropriate because her dress is as colorful as Christmas decorations.

She’s so over the top here, and when she scoots down the bench and then slowly plies to get off the bench I screamed.

Mitt Romney: Gays currently married can stay married, but would bar future marriage equality

Mitt Romney, in an interview with the Boston Herald, said he would support a constitutional amendment that could create a complex three-tier system of marriage — maintaining marriage rights for straight couples, allowing gays who have already married to remain married, but barring future same-sex marriages.

“I think it would keep intact those marriages which had occurred under the law but maintain future plans based on marriage being between a man and a woman,” Romney said.

Well, how nice.  He would let those of us who are married to the person we love stay married.  Generous of him.  Then there’s the part where he would deny future nuptials for gays and lesbians.

Perhaps he’s trying to look a bit less hateful after his recent disastrous “meeting” on the campaign trail with gay Vietnam vet, Bob Garon.  I don’t think it’s working.

Billy has appeared on Entertainment Tonight, The Insider, Dr. Phil, MTV, Jenny Jones, The View, The Ellen Degeneres Show and Maury Povich, where he was voted one of the most memorable guests of the year. All the while, gracing the pages of magazines like People, Life & Style, and US Weekly.

You can see the Kardashians on the many airings of their TV shows, and you can catch Billy (when not overseeing his successful GNC store in Idaho) on tour and in Las Vegas, at the Rio Hotel and Casino, with the Chippendales.

Unemployment applications drop to 3 year low

Fewer people are seeking unemployment benefits than just three months ago — a sign that layoffs are falling sharply.

The number of people applying for benefits fell last week to 366,000, the fewest since May 2008. If the number stayed that low consistently, it would likely signal that hiring is strong enough to lower unemployment.

The unemployment rate is now 8.6 percent. The last time applications were this low, the rate was 5.4 percent.

The four-week average of weekly unemployment applications, which smooths out fluctuations, dropped last week to 387,750. That’s the lowest four-week since July 2008. The four-week average has declined in 10 of the past 12 weeks.

“Labor market conditions have taken a turn for the better in recent weeks,” Michael Gapen, an economist at Barclays Capital, said in a note to clients. “Payroll growth should improve in the coming months.”

Applications for unemployment benefits are a measure of the pace of layoffs. Job cuts have fallen sharply since the recession. Employers have been hiring at only a modest pace. But when applications fall below 375,000 — consistently — that usually signals that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.
