New Jersey to take up gay marriage bill
UPDATE: At a press conference attended by nearly a dozen top Democrats in the Senate and Assembly, Senate President Stephen Sweeney said the marriage equality bill will go to key legislative committees “immediately.’’
“Further, he said he wants a floor vote in the Senate before the budget break, which is in March. He said he expects there will be enough votes in both houses to pass the measure but noted the battle will come when the bill reaches Christie’s desk for enactment.
“It’s gonna be a fight. We expect it to be a fight,’’ Sweeney said. “The governor’s a decent person and I think we can work on educating him to the fact of what it means.’’

Marriage equality will be the very first bill considered by the New Jersey legislature when the 2012 session begins on Wednesday.
In a dramatic move, Democratic leaders plan to announce at a news conference Monday that a bill legalizing gay marriage will be the first measure introduced in the new session of the Senate and the Assembly, sources with knowledge of their intentions said last night. A unified Democratic leadership represents the best chance supporters will have to see a bill legalizing gay marriage move through both houses, according to three sources who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the plan.
In 2006 former Gov. Jon Corzine signed a bill that gave same-sex couples who form civil unions “all of the same benefits, protections and responsibilities, “that state law confers on married couples.
Gov. Chris Christie opposes same-sex marriage and has vowed not to sign any bill should one reach his desk.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords leads memorial with Pledge of Allegiance
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords led a crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, her words ringing out across a cold Tucson night in a rare public appearance Sunday evening at a candlelight vigil one year after surviving a deadly shooting that killed six.
The Democratic congresswoman stepped onstage to cheers from the crowd. Ron Barber, a staffer who was wounded in a deadly shooting one year ago, invited her to lead the audience in the pledge.
The crowd chanted: “Gabby, Gabby.”
She limped to the podium, and husband Mark Kelly helped lift her left hand over her heart. After a year in which she has struggled to speak, Giffords recited the pledge with the audience, head held high and a smile on her face as she punched each word.
The remembrance at the University of Arizona capped off a day of events, including a church service that drew hundreds in the afternoon and a citywide bell-ringing at 10:11 a.m., the exact time a gunman started shooting at a Safeway political event.
With hugs and tears, southern Arizonans remembered the dead, the shattered lives and those who acted heroically after a gunman opened fire at an outdoor meet-and-greet that severely wounded Giffords and killed six.
Why I don’t do bungee jumps…
An Australian woman escaped with just cuts and bruises after her bungee cord snapped during a New Year’s Eve jump in Africa, sending her flying head-first into raging, crocodile-infested waters.
Erin Langworthy’s ill-fated jump from the Victoria Falls bridge – 111 metres above the Zambezi River – was caught on camera, showing the rope snapping and a large splash in the water below.
The footage showed her being washed downstream with the bungee cord still wrapped around her legs.
Zambia’s tourism minister Given Lubinda moved to reassure tourists that bungee jumping was safe.
“The bungee has proven to be a very viable operation considering that more than 50,000 tourists jump on it every year,” he told the Lusaka Times.
An investigation into the rope snap has been launched by the Tourism Ministry.

No spin-off for GLEE seniors
From BroadwayWorld: There have been many questions and rumors regarding the fate of three of GLEE’s main characters: Rachel (played by Broadway veteran Lea Michele), Finn (Cory Monteith) and Kurt (Chris Colfer).
GLEE creator Ryan Murphy had stated that he was looking into a spinoff for the trio, but according to TV Line, Fox Entertainment’s president Kevin Reilly now says that “There will not be a Glee spinoff, but those characters will graduate.”
That doesn’t, as previously speculated, mean that the characters won’t be returning. “It’s led to a very interesting idea that I think is going to really give us something cool to dig into next season,” Reilly says.
He also confirms that Lea Michele and Cory Monteith would be back for a fourth season, but admits that co-star Chris Colfer may not be. “What I said before is creatively, we’d want everybody back. I’ve got to look at the contractual situation for all of those. And we will.”
Now in it’s third season, since its debut, GLEE has become a bona fide cultural phenomenon, received prestigious honors including the Golden Globe and Peabody Award and singlehandedly made glee clubs cool again.
