NC: Chelsea Clinton opposes Amendment One

“I believe that everyone must stand up for what is right, whenever possible, wherever possible. I also believe that when the civil rights of any one American or group of Americans in one place are questioned, all Americans, everywhere, should care that the answer is the right one. Those are lessons I learned at a young age from my parents and they are guiding principles in my life.

“That is why I am joining you in opposing Amendment One in North Carolina. Amendment One unfairly targets women, children and families, gay and straight, who fall outside of the narrow definition of family articulated by those who drafted the legislation. It is our duty to join the fight on behalf of both the gay and lesbian North Carolinians who were the original targets of the amendment and the tens of thousands of straight male and female North Carolinians who will be collateral damage if the amendment passes next Tuesday.” – Chelsea Clinton.

International Press Academy’s Satellite Awards event honoring Brian Edwards

What a terrific event.  Brian Edwards was honored for his work in client relations at the International Press Academy’s Satellite Awards event last night.

Some of the famous folk attending included Vanessa Williams, Cindy Crawford, Pam Tillis, Nita Whitaker and Sasha Cohen.

The award presentation included video greetings from Joan Rivers, Whoopi Goldberg, Ali Landry and many others.

I had a great time catching up with Vanessa, especially about Broadway theater – comparing notes of what we’ve seen so far, friends being nominated for awards, and what we still want to make sure we see. Once you’ve lived in the theater, it’s in your blood. There’s just no losing that passion.

Vanessa also sang an impromptu a cappella version of “Happy Days Are Here Again” in honor of Brian that was amazing.  What a voice.  She sounded great.

NC: State senator’s wife can’t recall what she said about “protecting the Caucasian race”



From Think Progress: The wife of a prominent North Carolina state senator and supporter of Amendment 1 — a proposed ballot initiative that would outlaw same-sex marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships in the state — claimed earlier this week that her husband advocated for the measure to protect the “Caucasian” race.

Jodie Brunstetter, the wife of North Carolina state Sen. Peter Brunstetter, made the remarks “outside the early voting site at the Forsyth County Government Center in downtown Winston-Salem” while speaking to voters, Chad Nance, a Winston-Salem freelance journalist, reports. Nance heard about Jodie’s comments from an African-American poll worker who allegedly overheard Brunstetter say, “The reason my husband wrote Amendment 1 was because the Caucasian race is diminishing and we need to uh, reproduce.”

Asked to clarify her statement, Brunstetter reluctantly confirmed that she did in fact use the phrase “Caucasian”:

BRUNSTETTER: [P]eople who founded the United states wrote a Constitution and it has been what has preserved this society. And we were just talking about lots of different things which the gentleman was turning around.

NANCE: You didn’t tell that one lady that it was to preserve the Caucasian race, because they were becoming a minority? That’s what an old lady down the block told us.

BRUNSTETTER: No, no.

NANCE: You didn’t say that? She’s lying?

BRUNSTETTER: No. It’s just that same sex marriages are not having children. […]

NANCE: You didn’t say anything about Caucasians?

BRUNSTETTER: I probably said the word.

NANCE: In reference to….? You didn’t tell her anything about Caucasians? …

BRUNSTETTER: Right now I am a little confused myself because there has been confusion here today about this amendment, where it is very simple. The opponents are saying things that are not true and so there has been a lot of conversation going back and forth…. Right now I have some heat stroke going on. I’m not quite sure now. Because there has been lots of confusion.

NANCE: So you did or did not say anything about Caucasians?

BRUNSTETTER: If I did it wasn’t anything race related.

I’m still not clear why anyone would bring up the word “caucasian” – a word which is a racial identifier – if you are not discussing a racial issue.

Wisconsin: Scott Walker’s number stagnate despite millions spent on recall

A new Marquette Law School poll finds that Scott Walker and his most likely recall opponent, Tom Barrett, are in a dead heat, with Barrett edging Walker by 47-46 among registered Wisconsin voters.

The really important finding here, however, is that Walker’s approval rating, and his head to head numbers with Barrett, have not changed in months — if anything, they’re going down. And this is in spite of the fact that Walker and his allies have vastly outspent rivals in TV ads.

Charles Franklin, a political scientist and expert in Wisconsin politics who directs the Marquette poll, sends over some numbers.

In January, Walker’s job approval was 51 percent; in March, it was 50 percent; and this month, it’s 47 percent.

Recent poll numbers:

January: Walker leads Barrett 50-44
March: Walker leads Barrett 47-45
Now: Walker trails Barrett 46-47

“There’s been a great deal of advertising in the state, especially from the Walker campaign and Republican supporters, and we’ve seen virtually no movement in the Walker numbers,” says Franklin.

Lawrence O’Donnell addresses Pastor Sean “punch your gay son” Harris debacle

Lawrence O’Donnell addresses the scandal and the “apology” of Pastor Sean Harris.

The pastor also called in to the Michelangelo Signorile show yesterday to explain his sermon and apology. That didn’t go so well either.

At this point the pastor should probably stop talking and start thinking about his next sermon…

Missouri GOP State Rep Zach Wyatt comes out and speaks against “Don’t Say Gay” bill

Republican Missouri State Rep. Zach Wyatt came out of the closet today in a speech to Republican colleagues, asking them to withdraw their support like anti-gay issues like the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which has been advancing through the legislature.

By coming out, Wyatt becomes the only openly gay Republican state lawmaker in the country, according to PROMO, Missouri’s statewide advocacy organization for LGBT equality.

Said Wyatt:

“I will not lie to myself anymore about my own sexuality. It has probably been the hardest thing to come to terms with. I have always ignored it, didn’t event think about it, or want to talk about it. I have not been immune to it. I hear the comments, usually snide ones, about me. I’m not the first or last Republican to come out. I’ve just gotten tired of the bigotry being shown from both sides of the aisle on gay issues.”

If passed, the “Don’t Say Gay Bill” would ban public school-sponsored instruction, material, or extracurricular activities that discuss sexual orientation except when concerning human reproduction.

Hillary Clinton turns down movie role

Hillary Clinton just gets funnier and cooler by the day.

Jason Segal recently explained that when reporters ask who the mysterious mother is on “How I Met Your Mother,” he tells them it’s Clinton.

Last month, he also told Us Weekly that he thinks she “would be good at comedy” and joked that he’d like to work with her on the (fictional) film “Forgetting Sarah Marshall 2: This Time It’s Personal.”

The secretary of state apparently heard of his requests and wrote Segel a letter.
