Audra McDonald To Star In Broadway Revival Of ‘GYPSY’

Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald will return to the Great White Way this fall in a new revival of the legendary Broadway musical Gypsy.

The new production will be directed by 3-time Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe, who will also receive a Lifetime Achievement honor at this year’s Tonys. The fabulous Camille A. Brown (Hell’s Kitchen, Once On This Island) will handle choreography duties. The revival will reopen the Majestic Theatre, which has been dark since the closing of The Phantom of the Opera in 2023. Performances are scheduled to begin on November 21, 2024, with an official opening night on December 19. Producers Tom Kirdahy and Mara Isaacs said in a statement to Playbill:

“When we began this journey, we had the specific dream of pairing Audra McDonald, our most lauded stage actress, with legendary director George C. Wolfe in a musical deemed by many to be the greatest.

“Sometimes the theatre gods smile upon us. This is one such time. We could not be more honored to bring this particular Gypsy to the Broadway stage and also include the singular Camille A. Brown as part of our creative team.”

The original production (book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) premiered in 1959 with Ethel Merman. Since then, Gypsy has returned to Broadway in 1974, starring Angela Lansbury; 1989, starring Tyne Daly; 2003, starring Bernadette Peters; and 2008, starring Patti LuPone. Just three months ago McDonald shut down “rumors” of her starring in a revival of Gypsy. The producers dropped this teaser video today: https://youtu.be/SZ1K7fwYPFg?si=obQXIvZLqFDYVV9k
