The percentage of Americans who say they are satisfied with the acceptance of gay and lesbian people in the country has reached a new peak at 62%, according to a new Gallup poll. From USA Today:
In 2022, 62% of survey respondents said they are very or somewhat satisfied with the acceptance of gays and lesbians in the nation, up from 55% in 2021 and 56% in 2020.
Americans’ satisfaction with the acceptance of gay and lesbian people stood out in the 2022 poll because it reached the highest level the nation has seen since Gallup started tracking the trend in 2001, though the peak is statistically similar to 2016 levels.
“It just speaks to changes in societal norms that we’ve seen over the past, really, two decades,” Jeff Jones, a senior editor at Gallup told USA Today. “When we used to ask about same-sex marriage, in the 1990s and even in early 2000s, we would have majorities opposed. And now we have solid majorities that seem to grow at least a little bit every year.” Some folks have noted that the question posed by Gallup referenced “gays and lesbians,” not the more inclusive “LGBTQ” which basically leaves bisexual and transgender people out of the poll.
