Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a South African human rights lawyer, is the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner. She is being recognized for “for her efforts to promote peace and international law.”
Ms. Pillay led a United Nations commission last year that investigated the war in Gaza and concluded that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians. The Israeli government denounced the report.
The Nobel committee didn’t mention the Israel report in its announcement.
As you probably know, Donald Trump has long coveted (and never received) the high honor.

At a ceremony in Oslo, Norwegian Nobel Committee Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes called Pillay “one of the most courageous and important legal experts of our time.”
At a news conference, Pillay said she was deeply honored and dedicated the prize to “all of the survivors of international crimes” and “defenders of international justice.”
“We are living through an era when international law and human rights are under significant political attack,” she added.
Pillay was applauded by colleagues while in Nuremberg after receiving the news of her Nobel win.
“If you clap a little bit more, I may share this prize with Trump,” she joked in front of a small crowd of well-wishers.
The Nobel Prize comes with a financial award, which this year is 12 million Swedish kronor per prize, or about $1.2 million. Read more at NPR.
Trump was quick to share a post by his former criminal defense lawyer, David Schoen, criticizing Pillay’s win. #ForeverSoreLoser
