• The Advocate: A jury found Dmitriy Popov guilty of a hate crime for killing gay dancer O’Shae Sibley, who was voguing at a Brooklyn gas station in 2023. But he was only found guilty of manslaughter, not murder, potentially avoiding a life sentence.

• CNN: Under newly-proposed rules, the U.S. Postal Service won’t deliver mail-in ballots in Democratic-led states unless the states hand over their complete voter lists to the Justice Department.
This rule would give the federal government an unprecedented role in elections and could put even more voter data in the hands of Trump officials searching for supposed election fraud.

• NBC News: NASA has named the four astronauts it plans to send on the Artemis III mission, the next major step in its return-to-the-moon program.
• NPR: A report from the Labor Department on Wednesday showed inflation in May was up 4.2% from a year ago. That’s the biggest annual increase since April of 2023.

• Iowa Capital Dispatch: An Iowa jury has awarded $105,000 to a former college student whose YouTube video of a police traffic stop (below) generated 1.6 million views.
Tayvin Galanakis sued the city of Newton and its police department for false arrest, civil rights violations and negligent supervision and training, after he was arrested for drunken driving despite passing all sobriety tests.
