Report: Iran Deal May Include “$300B Investment Fund” For Iran

As mediators between Iran and the United States continue to negotiate a preliminary agreement that might ultimately end the war, one new detail of the agreement appears to reference a $300 billion “investment fund” for Iran.

The fate of the discussions between the U.S. and Iran remained unclear on Friday after U.S. officials said there had been progress toward a “memorandum of understanding.” Follow live updates.

From the New York Times:

Perhaps the most surprising, and apparently recent, addition to the agreement is a reference to an investment fund for Iran. The Iranian official and one diplomat put it at $300 billion, but other officials involved in mediation would not confirm the amount.

The Iranian official described it as a “reconstruction program” that would be promised to Iran in the event a final agreement was signed. Earlier in the negotiations, Tehran had demanded reparations for bombardment damage that some Iranian officials estimate at $300 billion to $1 trillion.

Two diplomats briefed on the latest draft called it an international “investment fund,” which the United States would help facilitate in the event of a final deal. Plans for such a fund would be further discussed during the negotiations period, the diplomats said.

You’ll recall Trump has long attacked former President Obama for releasing $1.7 billion in Iranian funds (“pallets of cash”) that had been frozen since the 1979 revolution.

The funds were initially paid to the U.S. by Iran in a $400 million arms deal. But when the shah was overthrown in 1979, the U.S. didn’t deliver the arms and froze the funds.

The Obama administration returned $1.7 billion in 2016 that had been held for the arms that were never delivered.

Now Trump wants to give $300 billion to Iran to get out of the war he started…?
