Redistricting Games: South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee

Republican-led redistricting games continue this week in several states in advance of the mid-term elections this fall with some good and bad news.

NBC News: The GOP-led South Carolina Senate has voted against a new congressional map, ending the last-minute redistricting effort in the state for now. The failed vote was a surprise rejection of Donald Trump, who wanted lawmakers to pass a redrawn map that would eliminate the state’s one majority-Black district.

New York Times: A panel of federal judges has rejected Alabama’s effort to use a new voting map for the November midterm elections, saying that the districts discriminated against Black people and could not be used so shortly before a vote. An appeal of the decision is most certainly in the cards.

Democracy Docket: A judge appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has approved a new congressional map — drawn by DeSantis’ office — for use in the 2026 midterm elections, despite what plaintiffs called “staggering” evidence that it violates the state’s voter-approved ban on partisan gerrymandering.

The Hill: A federal judge denied a request from several Black Memphis voters and organizations to temporarily halt the use of a new GOP-favored House map until a three-judge panel could weigh the merits of their case. The new map wipes out the state’s only Black-majority district, effectively handing Republicans one more congressional seat.
