The new documentary Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror is coming to digital on June 2.
The film made its world premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, where it took audiences on a five decade dive into the show created by Richard O’Brien, led by his son Linus who grew up alongside the fans that have kept Rocky Horror alive since 1976.
Strange Journey features in-depth interviews with original creatives Richard O’Brien, Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and stars that grew up in the glow of the Rocky Horror fandom like Trixie Mattel and Jack Black.
Official synopsis:
“Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror” is a joyful and wild ride through the tale of the cultural juggernaut that is The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
From its humble origins as a London fringe theater play, the documentary tracks its meteoric rise, fall and resurrection to become the biggest cult film of all time.
With intimate access to its creator Richard O’Brien and other major players such as Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Lou Adler, the documentary explores what makes the play and film so singular: Its groundbreaking and transgressive themes, iconic performances and epic songs that took over popular culture.
The cult phenomenon that sprung around it is unparalleled, and created not only the midnight screenings which continue to this day, but also a safe haven for those who ever felt different or marginalized – with particular significance for the queer community.
In our current political climate, Rocky Horror’s message of inclusion and self expression holds more resonance than ever. As Dr. Frank-N-Furter says, “Don’t Dream It, Be It.”
Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror
is currently sitting at 97% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
I grew up with the cult film’s famous midnight showings in my hometown. My brother became so enamored of the movie he attended the Friday night screenings dressing up as “Dr. Frank-N-Furter.”
As someone who’s on the spectrum, it was the first time my brother found “his tribe” where he was accepted with no judgements.
Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror will be available to rent or own June 2 on Apple TV, Prime Video, and Fandango.
