Happy Friday! Some news items for you as we head into the holiday weekend:
• Queerty: The new short film Something Still tracks the trajectory of Max (Zane Phillips – above) and Tom’s (John Brodsky) time together, from their passionate earlier days to the resulting impact of opening their relationship.
The short makes its world premiere next week at Toronto’s Inside Out Festival. I’m a bit obsessed with Zane’s comfortable, focused performance.
• The Advocate: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has quietly removed a federal public health webpage offering explicit safer-sex and harm reduction guidance for mpox. The deletion confirms fears that the Trump administration is scrubbing medically vetted information tied to queer communities from government websites.
• Boy Culture: Matt Rettenmund chats with Emmy Award winner Ryan O’Connell, who made TV history when he created, wrote and starred in the 2019-2021 series Special, a groundbreaking project that put a gay man with cerebral palsy front and center.
• Pink News: With queer sports romances all the rage, basketball is the next frontier! Courtside is a modern sports romantic comedy set in the world of professional women’s basketball complete with WNBA stars Syd Colson, Theresa Plaisance, and Gabby Williams attached to the project.
• Variety: The series finale of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” drew over 6.7 million viewers — the show’s most-watched weeknight episode of all time.
Pop legend Paul McCartney joined Colbert and the show’s full staff in a joyful performance of “Hello Goodbye” that ended with the two symbolically turning off the lights to the Ed Sullivan Theater on their way out the door.
