Donald Trump was asked Friday afternoon about the racist video clip posted to his Truth Social account that depicted former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama as apes in the jungle.
And again, the story changed.
Via the New York Times:
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on Friday, Mr. Trump said he only saw the beginning of the video. “I just looked at the first part, it was about voter fraud in some place, Georgia,” Mr. Trump said. “I didn’t see the whole thing.”
He then tried to deflect blame, suggesting he had given the link to someone else to post. “I gave it to the people, generally they’d look at the whole thing but I guess somebody didn’t,” he told reporters.
Still, Mr. Trump offered no contrition when pressed. “No, I didn’t make a mistake,” he said.
Here’s the audio:
Reporter: The WH says a staffer sent that video. Are you going to fire the staffer?
Trump: No. I looked at it. I didn’t see the whole thing. I gave it to the people, they posted it.
Reporter: Are you going to apologize?
Trump: No, I didn’t make a mistake. pic.twitter.com/VH1qmEOmb2

Just to jog your memory – earlier in the day the White House first defended the video saying it was an innocent, fun “Lion King” reference, then worked to construct a narrative that “a White House staffer erroneously made the post.”
But they were they lying. Trump was responsible and did see the video, but following his regular game plan, he threw his own people under the bus and took no accountability.
The White House blames a staffer for posting a racist meme.
