The U.S. House passed a bill on Wednesday that would make doctors and parents criminals for providing gender-affirming medical care to transgender minors, marking the first time Congress has approved a national ban on such treatment.
Introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (who recently announced her resignation from the House), the legislation would impose felony penalties of up to 10 years in prison on physicians who provide puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or surgical care to patients under 18.
The bill would also expose parents or others who aid minors in accessing gender-affirming care to criminal liability.
The bill passed with a narrow 216-211 vote, including support from three Democrats and opposition from four Republicans.

While it is unlikely to succeed in the Senate, advocates warn that the House vote could normalize criminal penalties for transgender healthcare and pave the way for further restrictions at the federal level.
Then on Thursday, the U.S. House passed another bill that would prevent Medicaid from covering gender-affirming care for transgender youth.
The bill, introduced by Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas, passed 215 to 201 Thursday with four Democrats voting in favor.
