Current WICKED co-stars Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande are reportedly in talks to headline a new revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park with George.
From Playbill:
The pair are in the early planning stages with Tony- and Olivier-winning director Marianne Elliott (Company) for a 2027 production in London’s West End.
Should the production move forward, the aim is a summer 2027 opening at the Barbican Theatre. With this news arriving 18 months out, however, there is still plenty of time for various aspects to fall through.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical (with a book by Lapine and a score by Sondheim) follows painter Georges Seurat in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.
Consumed by his need to “finish the hat,” Seurat alienates the French bourgeoisie, spurns his fellow artists, and neglects his lover Dot, not realizing that his actions will reverberate over the next 100 years.
The 2017 Broadway revival of the musical, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford, was scheduled to play London in 2020, only to be cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bailey previously collaborated with Elliott in the director’s West End revival of Sondheim’s Company. His show-stopping performance of “Not Getting Married Today” scored him an Olivier Award.
This proposed revival of Sunday would mark Grande’s first return to the stage since starring in 13 on Broadway in 2008.
