Deported U.S. Veteran ZOOMs Into Noem Hearing

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was NOT prepared for Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI) to come with receipts during her hearing before a House committee on national security threats.

From the Washington Post:

“As Americans, we owe everything to those who have served our country in uniform, particularly those who served in combat,” Magaziner told Noem. “Do you agree with that?”

Magaziner then introduced Sae Joon Park, a Purple Heart veteran who Magaziner said self-deported to South Korea in July because the Department of Homeland Security targeted him with detention and deportation. Park joined the hearing via Zoom call.

Magaziner said that Park has PTSD like many veterans and struggled with substance abuse, which led to arrests for minor drug offenses in the 1990s.

“He has sacrificed more for this country than most people ever have,” Magaziner said. “Earlier this year, you deported him to Korea, a country he hasn’t lived in since he was seven years old. Will you join me in thanking Mr. Park for his service to our country?”

Noem did not directly thank Park but said she is “grateful for every single person that has served our country.” She told Magaziner she will look into Park’s case.

Magaziner then introduced Navy combat veteran Jim Brown, whose wife, Donna — an immigrant from Ireland who had lived in the United States for 48 years — has been in DHS detention for the past four months because she wrote a couple of bad checks for $80 10 years ago, Magaziner said. Noem said she would look into her case.

Magaziner concluded his time saying, “The biggest problem is this: You don’t seem to know how to tell the difference between the good guys and the bad guys.”

Noem departed the hearing early saying she “had a meeting.” That meeting was later reported to be cancelled.
