New Music: Rainbow Kitten Surprise ‘Tropics’

Indie rock band Rainbow Kitten Surprise recently dropped their new album, bones, featuring a visualizer of the new track “Tropics” from their sold-out show at Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheater last month.

I love when I get to feature rock bands here in TRR. From the opening track, “Friendly Fire,” to the laidback exhale of “Tropics,” bones is the product of a band in perfect harmony with one another.

“With bones we were trying to reconnect with our fans and our roots as a rock n roll band in a new way,” says frontwoman Ela Melo, who came out as trans in March 2022.

Asked about touring “as the truest version” of herself with the band since transitioning, Melo told Billboard the experience has been “freeing.”

“Incredibly freeing,” she added, “It’s changed my singing, it’s really changed everything about the live experience for me. ”

It’s been quite a 2025 for the band as they’ve already sold over 100,000 tickets for their year-long headline tour, surpassed 7M monthly listeners on Spotify, and their 2x Platinum hit “It’s Called: Freefall” was just featured in the new season of Ginny & Georgia.

The new record comes amid Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s massive Thanks For Coming Tour across North America, including a sold-out stop at Morrison’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater, notably marking the band’s fourth time selling out the venue.

For the tour, the band launched the Rainbow Kitten Surprise Fund, created in collaboration with PLUS1, which will donate $1 from every ticket sold to promoting equality by way of LGBTQ+ rights, mental health care access, and supporting food sovereignty.

Since 2019, the band’s charitable donations have surpassed $420,000.
