Former FBI Director James Comey Indicted After Pressure From Trump

A federal grand jury in Virginia has indicted James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director and a longtime target of Donald Trump.

Trump has been relentless in pushing to exact revenge on Comey for investigating his 2016 presidential campaign over possible ties to Russia.

From the New York Times:

While the charges have yet to be unsealed, the people familiar with the decision said the grand jury had indicted Mr. Comey on Thursday on one count of making a false statement and one count of obstruction.

The move came after Mr. Trump intensified his pressure campaign on the Justice Department in recent days, publicly demanding that top officials prosecute Mr. Comey and Letitia James, the New York attorney general who sued Mr. Trump for inflating the value of his assets while out of office.

Many current and former Justice Department officials said they viewed the filing of criminal charges against Mr. Comey, based on what they considered weak evidence, as deeply troubling.

These charges follow Trump’s removal of Eric Siebert, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, in the past week (after Trump had picked him in the first place). Several sources have said Siebert had doubts about bringing cases against Comey due to lack of or weak evidence.

Trump then installed Lindsey Halligan, a White House aide and his former defense attorney, to lead the office. She reportedly made it into Trump’s orbit because she was at Mar-a-Lago the day it was searched by the FBI. Halligan apparently has no prior prosecutorial experience having previously worked on insurance cases.

Comey posted this video on social media right after the news broke.
