In Theaters: ‘Plainclothes’ Starring Russell Tovey + Tom Blyth

In a new interview about their new romantic drama, Plainclothes, Russell Tovey embraces his ‘Daddy’ era as his co-star Tom Blyth admits to having a “massive talent crush” on Tovey.

Plainclothes stars Blyth as Lucas, a handsome, young cop assigned to go undercover at local cruising spots to arrest men who attempt to have sex with him.

The glitch is that Lucas is himself in the closet, and finds himself attracted to one of his targets – Andrew, an older man played by Looking star Russell Tovey.

Here’s the official trailer:

Tovey tells OUT Magazine the role allowed him to embrace his aging in a new way.

“Yeah, I embrace Daddy,” Tovey says. “I mean, Pedro Pascal says, ‘Daddy is a state of mind,’ but also I think realistically, I’m a dad age, so state of mind and state of play.”

Carmen Emmi, the film’s writer/director, says he “was always subconsciously” writing the role of Andrew with Tovey in mind. When Blyth was cast as Lucas and suggested Tovey for the role, Emmi saw the suggestion as “one of those universe moments” when everything fell into place.

Blyth tells OUT that he had a “massive talent crush” on Tovey prior to working together, which naturally made playing his love interest a lot easier.

“I’d had a massive talent crush on Russell for years, and that was part of why, when Carmen said, ‘Who do you imagine playing Andrew?’ And I was like, ‘Russell Tovey,” he says. “I met Russell, [and] I just converted it into an on-screen real crush, I think.”

I’m a big fan of both Tovey and Blyth. The film currently has an 85% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Plainclothes opens in theaters on September 19.
