The famed Hollywood Bowl hosted three sold-out performances of the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar this past weekend.
The event starred two spectacular out talents – Tony Award winner/Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo as “Jesus Christ,” and American Idol alum Adam Lambert (fresh off his run on Broadway in Cabaret) as “Judas.”
A worldwide sensation that has captivated audiences for many years, Jesus Christ Superstar is an enduring piece that delves into the biblical depiction of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, viewed through the perspective of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot.
The winning production was directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Sergio Trujillo, and Tony/Grammy Award-winner Stephen Oremus skillfully handled musical director/conductor duties.
Joining Erivo and Lambert are Phillipa Soo as Mary Magdalene and John Stamos as King Herod; Milo Manheim as Peter; and Raúl Esparza as Pontius Pilate.
I can tell you my social media feeds were filled with praise from friends who attended the stellar concerts.
Through the magic of YouTube, we have some highlights, beginning with Adam Lambert setting the evening’s high bar with”Heaven On Their Minds.”
Erivo scored an endless standing ovation with the show’s 11 o’clock number “Gethsemane.”
Phillipa Soo delivered a luscious performance of “I Don’t Know How To Love Him.”
And Adam Lambert clearly was born to sing “Superstar.” Special kudos for Raul Esparza’s full-throated vocals at the top of the clip as Pilate. And I’m loving the dancers living their best lives throwing down that choreography.
