Trump Fires Mike Waltz As National Security Adviser

According to reporting by Politico this morning, Donald Trump has decided to fire national security adviser Mike Waltz, most probably becoming the fall guy for the infamous SignalGate episode.

Since The Atlantic first reported on the existence of the Signal chat where top Trump administration officials discussed plans to attack members of the Iran-backed Houthi militant group in Yemen, questions swirled within the White House about Waltz’s future.

While Trump and administration officials repeatedly voiced confidence in Waltz, many in the West Wing were also furious at Waltz’s sloppy misstep.

Waltz created the chat and mistakenly added Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor of The Atlantic, to the conversation. The information concerning the March airstrikes, including the timing and weapons systems used, was likely highly classified, per former and current officials.

It is unclear who would step in to run the influential White House National Security Council if Waltz is removed. Currently, a leading pick is Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, who is shepherding negotiations with Russia, Iran and Hamas in Gaza, according to the three of the people.

Deputy national security adviser Alex Wong is also expected to leave. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt declined to respond to “reporting from anonymous sources,” but shortly after these reports appeared Trump wrote on his Truth Social account today that he is now nominating Waltz to be the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
