The good news this morning is Wisconsin voters overwhelmingly elected Judge Susan Crawford over Brad Schimel to their state Supreme Court despite millions of dollars spent by Elon Musk and endless anti-transgender advertisements. Much of the money backing Schimel went toward political ads targeting transgender people. The results mean the state Supreme Court will retain a 4-3 liberal majority. 
President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk loomed large over the contest. Trump endorsed Schimel, who touted Trump’s support in digital ads and at events, hoping to animate the president’s voters even though he wasn’t on the ballot.
Musk, for his part, shoveled millions into the race, including handing out million-dollar checks to two Wisconsin voters last weekend.
Democrats turned the contest into a referendum on Trump’s second term, featuring Musk’s government spending-slashing Department of Government Efficiency heavily in ads during the final weeks of the campaign.
Crawford’s win is also a sign that Democrats continue to overperform in non-presidential elections that tend to draw more participation from highly engaged voters.
After spending more than $20 million of his own money in the race (and donning a cheese head), Musk now claims he expected Schimel to lose and the passage of Wisconsin’s Question 1, which added the state’s preexisting voter ID law to its constitution, was really the “win” he was going for. #SureJan 
In additional election news, Republicans in Florida won two U.S. House special elections as expected, but Democrats cut Donald Trump’s margin by 22 points in Matt Gaetz’s old seat, and 16 points in national security adviser Mike Waltz’s district.
