Oh no!!! Very bad news for me. Lester Holt, the venerable anchor of the “NBC Nightly News” for more than a decade, has announced he will step down from his post sometime in late Spring.
From the New York Times:
Mr. Holt told colleagues that he would remain at NBC, expanding his duties at “Dateline,” where he serves as the show’s anchor.
“It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to work with each of you every day, keeping journalism as our true north and our viewers at the center of everything we do,” Mr. Holt, 65, wrote in a memo to colleagues.
He said that he would continue anchoring the evening news until “the start of summer.” The network did not immediately name a successor.
Amid the often angry and heavy news reporting during the first Trump administration and into the COVID crisis, I found watching most of the continuous news coverage on cable networks unsustainable for my mental health. Instead, I chose to read my news from a few trusted sources. But early in the pandemic I felt I “should” watch some news somewhere. So i decided to pick one of the major network evening news shows. Something middle of the road, just the facts, and a quick 30 minutes. I quickly landed on Lester and the “NBC Nightly News.” Exactly what I was looking for without spin or hyperbole. Usually about 8 of the major news stories of the day – just the facts – and often a “good news” story to close. Lester was especially appealing to me with his top-shelf professionalism, long history as an award winning journalist, and grounded manner. Like the legendary Walter Cronkite (anchor for the “CBS Evening News” in the 60s and 70s), Lester has become my “most trusted man in America.” I have my TV service record every episode and at some time each evening I tell hubby Michael, “I’m off to my date with Lester.” A few years ago, a reporter I know shared with Lester what a big fan I am and never missed an episode. And then this appeared in my inbox… I know there are worse things to report in the world, but I can tell you Lester has done a lot to help my mental health over these past chaotic years. The good news is he will still be reporting for “Dateline,” so at least I have that. Sigh…
