The House Ethics Committee has released its report into former Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL),  Donald J. Trump’s former pick for attorney general. The report (which you can read here) details numerous incidents of Gaetz paying for sex, possessing illegal drugs and having sexual relations with an underage girl, according to the panel’s report.

From the New York Times:

The report, which was released on Monday, found that from at least 2017 to 2020, Mr. Gaetz “regularly paid women for engaging in sexual activity with him”; and, in 2017, “engaged in sexual activity with a 17-year-old girl,” the report said.

The Ethics Committee found that from 2017 to 2019, Mr. Gaetz used or possessed illegal drugs, including cocaine and ecstasy “on multiple occasions,” and accepted lavish gifts, including transportation to and lodging in the Bahamas, in excessive of permissible amounts.

The report’s release came after a tumultuous month for Mr. Gaetz. In November, Mr. Trump announced he had chosen the Florida congressman to lead the Justice Department, prompting anger and concern among members of both parties on Capitol Hill.

Mr. Gaetz resigned from Congress on the day he was tapped to lead the Justice Department, but the news soon leaked that the secretive House Ethics Committee was poised to release its long-awaited investigation into Mr. Gaetz’s conduct.

The House Ethics Committee released a report that found evidence that former Rep. Matt Gaetz paid thousands of dollars for sex and drugs, including allegedly paying a 17-year-old girl for sex in 2017.

And more from CNN:

The committee found that the sexual encounters were often organized by Greenberg through a website, SeekingArrangement.com. “Mr. Greenberg told the Committee that Representative Gaetz was aware that the women they had sex with and paid had met Mr. Greenberg through the ‘sugar dating’ website,” the panel wrote.

“There is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz used cocaine, ecstasy, and marijuana. At least two women saw Representative Gaetz using cocaine and ecstasy at different events,” the committee wrote. “Additionally, nearly every witness interviewed observed Representative Gaetz using marijuana.”

The committee concluded its 37-page report writing: “The Committee determined there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress.” Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration for attorney general in short order once it became clear there was significant Senate opposition to his nomination. The former congressman, who denies any wrong doing, tried to block the release of the report this morning, but bungled the filing. Gaetz has announced it will be joining the right-wing One America News Network as an anchor in January.
