2024 International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

Around the world, millions of people in more than 130 countries observe today as the 2024 International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOTB). The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) was created in 2004 to draw the attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public, and the media to the alarming situation faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people and all those who do not conform to majority sexual and gender norms. Even as millions of LGBTQ people around the world are standing up for visibility and fighting for their rights, many live in fear and isolation. https://twitter.com/gaytimes/status/1791423582452523165 Two steps forward, one step back: While marriage equality is now legal in 37 countries,  there are still 64 countries that criminalize homosexuality, while trans people still face severe punishment in at least 13 countries. And transgender people face an epidemic of violence and murder on a daily basis, including here in the U.S. From Gay Times:

Last year, Uganda introduced punitive laws targeting the queer community and introduced the death penalty for so-called ‘aggravated’ homosexuality.

In Russia, individuals have been arrested following the state’s decision to label the LGBTQIA+ rights movement as a form of extremism.

Anti-LGBTQIA+ attacks have increased in the UK in recent years, services are being cut, and trans people are under attack in the media on a daily basis.

It’s important to remember discrimination isn’t always a physical or verbal attack. It can also be restrictions to healthcare, education, information and benefits. Discrimination comes in many forms and guises, it isn’t always obvious.

IDAHOTB is not one centralized campaign; rather, it is a moment that everyone can take advantage of to take action. https://twitter.com/gaytimes/status/1791514196183576649 President Joe Biden issued a statement in honor of IDAHOTB 2024. Donald Trump never stood up for the LGBTQ community, so I’ll take this moment to remind you election Day is November 5th. https://twitter.com/WhiteHouse/status/1791526223178334388
