Gov. Kristi Noem (R) of South Dakota, considered a leading contender to be Donald Trump’s running mate, shares in a new book that she shot and killed a 14-month-old hunting dog after deciding the pup was “untrainable.” https://twitter.com/BillKristol/status/1783817188962423222 Via The Guardian:
“Cricket was a wirehair pointer, about 14 months old,” the South Dakota governor writes in a new book, adding that the dog, a female, had an “aggressive personality” and needed to be trained to be used for hunting pheasant.
By taking Cricket on a pheasant hunt with older dogs, Noem says, she hoped to calm the young dog down and begin to teach her how to behave. Unfortunately, Cricket ruined the hunt, going “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life.”
“I hated that dog,” Noem writes, adding that Cricket had proved herself “untrainable,” “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with,” and “less than worthless … as a hunting dog”. Noem got her gun, then led Cricket to a gravel pit. “It was not a pleasant job,” she writes, “but it had to be done.”
The governor goes on to say she also killed a family goat that same day. Noem is rightfully being lambasted on social media today, especially by hunting experts who say the fault was Noem’s for being too lazy to properly train the dog. And, good god, couldn’t she have simply re-homed the dog or surrendered her to a shelter? Folks believe Noem shared the episode to illustrate her willingness, in politics and life in general, to do the “difficult, messy and ugly” tasks that need to get done. Also because Trump doesn’t like dogs and she thinks the story will appeal to him. https://twitter.com/TheRickWilson/status/1783839315727888679 https://twitter.com/MaryLTrump/status/1783894301749006571 https://twitter.com/bobcesca_go/status/1783855829197742226 https://twitter.com/mmpadellan/status/1783903074815283620 https://twitter.com/NikkiMcR/status/1783891970496123041
