A day before she was to go to trial, Sidney Powell, a member of Donald Trump’s legal team and one of 18 co-defendants (including Trump) in the election interference case in Georgia, has pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against the co-defendants. Powell was one of the most virulent promoters of election fraud theories after Donald Trump’s 2020 defeat. In several public appearances, she pushed conspiracies involving Venezuela, George Soros, Hugo Chávez, and the Clintons while asserting that voting machines had flipped millions of votes from Trump to Biden. https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1715010520544125062 From the New York Times:
Most of the Georgia charges against Ms. Powell relate to her role in a data breach at an elections office in rural Coffee County, Ga. There, on the day after the Jan. 6 riots, Trump allies copied sensitive and proprietary software used in voting machines throughout the state in a fruitless hunt for ballot fraud.
Ms. Powell’s vow during a Fox Business Network appearance in 2020 to “release the kraken,” or a trove of phantom evidence proving that Mr. Trump had won, went viral after the election, though the trove never materialized.
The next year, after Dominion Voting Systems sued her and a number of others for defamation, Ms. Powell’s lawyers argued that “no reasonable person would conclude” that some of her wilder statements “were truly statements of fact.”
reports Powell pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor charges. She is sentenced to 6 years probation, a $6000 fine, $2700 restitution, issue an apology letter, must testify against the co-defendants, and have no media contact concerning the facts and circumstances of this case. Powell is the second co-defendant to take a plea deal. Scott Hall, 59, a Georgia bail bondsman, pleaded guilty to five misdemeanors last month. This is, of course, terrible news for the Donald.
