House Democrats Rescue Republicans With Temp Funding Bill

UPDATE: McCarthy’s ‘hail Mary’ bill to keep the government open for 45 days has passed (335-91) thanks to the Democrats. More Dems voted for the measure than Republicans. Ninety-one Republicans and one Democrat voted against the bill. The measure, which still must pass the Senate, would keep funding the federal government through mid-November and provide billions of dollars for disaster recovery efforts. But it did not include money for Ukraine, a major sticking point for Democrats in the House and Senate. The Democrats kept the government open. Far-right Rep. At midday on Saturday, they hastily brought up a measure that would keep government funding flowing for 45 days, keeping federal agencies open and more than 2 million service members and 1.5 million civilian employees from missing their paychecks and include disaster relief aid — but no money for Ukraine.

Democrats meeting behind closed doors were furiously reading through the 71-page bill. It was unclear whether they would support the legislation in the kind of numbers needed to pass it, which would take two-thirds of the House under special rules Republicans were using to speed it through the chamber.

I’m watching the live stream of the House right now, and Democrats are trying to stall a vote by requesting time on the floor and extending it over and over in order to have the time to read and digest the 71-page bill. Senate Republicans apparently want to see what the House does before voting on their own bill, which would keep the government open to November 17. Two days ago, the Senate voted overwhelmingly (77-19) to open debate on that legislation.
