In one of its first legislative actions following a shooting at a Nashville elementary school that killed six people, the House Republican supermajority ejected Jones with a 72-25 vote for defying House decorum — making him the first House member to be removed from elected office for a decorum violation.
Nashville’s progressive-leaning council, responsible for filling the vacancy, unanimously voted Jones back into the District 52 House seat 36-0 Monday as an interim representative until a special election can be held to permanently fill the position. Jones is eligible to run for reelection.
https://twitter.com/nowthisnews/status/1645543330430722048 I understand Jones’ former colleague, Justin Pearson, could be reinstated as soon as Wednesday by city leaders in Memphis. It’s interesting the state House Republicans called Pearson and Jones’ act of raising their voices for common-sense gun legislation after six people were killed at a school weeks before “an insurrection.” But unlike what happened at the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021, neither Jones nor Pearson vandalized the Tennessee capitol building to gain entry. Nor did they assault police officers, break anything nor did they steal items from the building.
