President Obama issues World AIDS Day Proclamation

“Today, we reflect on the strides we have taken toward overcoming HIV/AIDS, honor those who have made our progress possible, and keep in our thoughts all those who have known the devastating consequences of this illness. The road toward an AIDS-free generation is long — but as we mark this important observance, let us also remember that if we move forward every day with the same passion, persistence, and drive that has brought us this far, we can reach our goal. We can beat this disease. On World AIDS Day, in memory of those no longer with us and in solidarity with all who carry on the fight, let us pledge to make that vision a reality.

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States do hereby proclaim December 1, 2012, as World AIDS Day. I urge the Governors of the States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, officials of the other territories subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, and the American people to join me in appropriate activities to remember those who have lost their lives to AIDS and to provide support and comfort to those living with this disease.” – President Obama.

World AIDS Day event: The Beginning of the End of AIDS

Featuring President Barack Obama, President George W. Bush, President Bill Clinton, Bono, Alicia Keys and others.

At the event, President Barack Obama announced a new target Thursday of securing treatment for six million people by the end of 2013 and urged other countries to step up in the global fight against HIV, singling out China as one of the world’s economic powerhouses that has yet to adequately do so.

President Obama said the treatment goal over the next two years covers two million more people than originally proposed.

“Few could have imagined that we’d be talking about the real possibility of an AIDS-free generation,” the president said at the ONE Campaign and (RED)-hosted event that included remarks via satellite from former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. “But that’s what we’re talking about. That’s why we’re here. And we arrived here because of all of you and your unwavering belief that we can — and we will — beat this disease.”

“Life’s A Ball” – World AIDS Day event in Las Vegas

The Nevada AIDS Project presents “Life’s A Ball,” a three-part event that celebrates life and a journey towards the cure.

The evening, which takes place in Club Nikki at the newly transformed Tropicana Las Vegas, kicks-off with an awards presentation to honor individuals who have made a difference in the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS in the Las Vegas valley, followed by entertainment from local, national and international performers; a fashion show, and a dance party.

“Life’s A Ball” is made possible by the generous sponsorship of the all new Tropicana Las Vegas and MTV.

The star-studded event will include cast members of Absinthe, Penny and Melody Sweets, the men of Chippendales, the ladies of Fantasy, the casts of Zumanity and Bite; Miss Nevada 2011, Reva Rice, star of Vegas! The Show and People Magazine’s “Hottest Bachelors” star Matt Zarley.

Special surprise guests have been mentioned – drop by and see who’s at the event!

Suggested donation is $20, but no specified fee for general admission.  The event is from 7pm to midnight tonight.
