First gay couple registers to marry in Uruguay

Two gay men who have been a couple for 14 years have become the first to register to marry in Uruguay, hours after a law came into force allowing same-sex marriages in the country.

Rodrigo Borda, 39, and Sergio Miranda, 45, said it was a day of much joy and emotion, but also of responsibility.

Uruguay is the second South American nation to pass a gay-marriage law.

Mr Borda and Mr Miranda said they would celebrate their wedding in September.

It would be a “very public affair”, not only because they wanted to share the moment with “all the world”, but also because they wanted “to give an example to those gay couples who may be thinking about getting married but don’t dare to”, the couple added.

Three years ago, Argentina became the first country in Latin America to allow same-sex marriages.
Reforms

Since then, Brazil’s Supreme Court overwhelmingly voted in favor of granting same-sex couples the same legal rights as married heterosexuals.

Marriage equality passes in Uruguay

Blabbeando shares the news that Uruguay gave final approval to marriage equality tonight after its House voted 92-71 to pass the bill.

President José Mujica says he intends to sign it.

This brings the number of countries that offer marriage equality to 12 as Uruguay joins The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Argentina, and Denmark.

Three countries – Brazil, Mexico, and the U.S. – offer marriage in parts of each respective country.

Uruguay approves marriage equality!

The Uruguay Senate just approved its marriage equality bill by a vote of 23-8.

The bill will return to the country’s lower legislative chamber for minor changes, but President Mujica has promised to sign the bill and marriages should commence within a few months.

From Freedom to Marry: “When marriages between same-sex couples begin this summer, Uruguay will join 11 countries that have the freedom to marry for same-sex couples nationwide: The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Argentina, and Denmark.

“Three others have taken judicial and regional steps to allow same-sex couples to share in the freedom to marry in parts of the country: Brazil, Mexico, and the United States.”

Uruguay marriage equality Senate bill vote postponed

Uruguay’s Senate was expected to vote on and pass its marriage equality bill today. Opponents of the bill slowed that progress down a bit.

The “Marriage Equality Law” seeks to modify some 20 articles of the Civil Code, including whose surname goes first when children are named.

Opponents asked for the bill’s vote to be postponed until the Senate’s first meeting in April to allow more time to study the proposal. The request received unanimous approval.

The bill has already received an initial nod in the Senate and it cleared the nation’s lower house earlier this month.

President Jose Mujica has said he’ll sign the bill into law. Uruguay currently recognizes gay couples with civil unions. After a couple has lived in a “stable relationship” for 5 years, they may petition the government for the recognition.
