Williams Institute: 1.4 Million In U.S. Identify As Transgender

According to the Williams Institute, approximately 0.6% of adults in the United States, or 1.4 million individuals, identify as transgender.

The figure comes from crunching the numbers available from the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).

The research goes even deeper, looking at state-level estimates of the number and percentage of adults who identify as transgender for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The state by state results rank the lowest to highest percentage of trans citizens, from 0.3% in North Dakota to 0.8% in Hawaii.

Not surprisingly, younger adults are more likely to identify as transgender than older adults.

Those who identify as transgender broken down along age differences:

• 0.7% of adults ages 18 to 24
• 0.6% of adults ages 25 to 64
• 0.5% of adults ages 65 and older identify as transgender.

Caitlyn Jenner Covers Sports Illustrated: “I Loved Bruce”

Caitlyn Jenner, in this month’s Sports Illustrated, has this to say about her former gender identity, Bruce Jenner:

“I loved Bruce. I still love him today. I like what he did and the way he set an example for hard work and dedication. I’m proud of that part of my life. But this woman was living inside me, all my life, and it reached the point where I had to let her live and put Bruce inside. And I am happier, these last 12 months, than I’ve ever been in my life.”

Joanna Lumley Outs Ab-Fab’s “Patsy” As Transgender

Did Joanna Lumley just “out” her Ab-Fab character “Patsy” as transgender?

Speaking to V Magazine:

“You go back and pick through it, the amount of gay references and ease with which it’s been put into the story, without it being dragged along like a great log of plot. It’s really normal that one of [Edina’s] ex-husbands now lives with his young boyfriend. It’s completely normal that [Edina] wants Saffy [Edina’s long-suffering daughter] to be a lesbian or that Serge [Edina’s long lost son] is gay and living in New York. It’s completely normal that Patsy is transgender.”

If you’re a fan of the series – and who isn’t? – the interview is really worth the read.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie hits theaters July 22nd.

Nevada’s Jon Ralston Shares – “The Child I Love”

Nevada’s top political reporter, Jon Ralston, shared with the world tonight the journey he and his transgender son, Jake, have taken as a family.

I should preface this by pointing out that Jon Ralston is a tough political reporter. There’s no holds barred when it comes to his reporting. But behind every tough persona lies a human heart. Ralston is no different.

I’d love to just copy and paste Jon’s full post, but I think it’s fair you head over to Ralston Reports to read his beautifully written essay on what is obviously a powerfully personal trek to “here.”

Here is just a few excerpts:

When Maddy Ralston came into this world almost 21 years ago, it was love at first sight.

I cradled her in my arms, my adopted miracle, and couldn’t stop crying. She was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

As she grew up, Maddy eschewed the traditional girly girl stuff. “If you get me a doll for Christmas, I’ll cut its head off,” she once admonished me.

She refused to wear the skirts in the school uniform catalogue, preferring the khaki pants. She became a full-fledged tomboy before high school. She was a stunning, blonde-blue-eyed kid, but she didn’t care. She would rather go sit for hours and fish at Sunset Park than go to the mall with other girls. She told me she wanted to be a boy.

[snip]

Maddy never really talked about what the truth was until junior year. But somehow she had known since she was five, when she eschewed dolls and dresses.

I don’t think I even listened very well when Maddy told me a few years ago she was really a male inside, that she was transgender. Sure, you are, I thought. It’s just a phase, I was certain.

After all, the kid has been through a lot. Her mother had died. She had to switch schools. She had no idea who she was.

But the truth was I had no idea. Or I was in denial.

Slowly but surely, I have come to not just accept it but to embrace it. I have learned a lot about transgender issues through my job. I have read a bit.

[snip]

I admit I sometimes still have a hard time with it all. I look around the house, see the pictures of me with my little girl and my eyes fill with tears. But those memories are forever, and Maddy told me not to take them down, that she cherishes those, too.

Last year, Maddy began talking about transitioning, about having surgery. And about six months ago, Maddy began taking testosterone to begin the process of becoming who she really is.

This week, Maddy went to court, bravely told a judge why she wanted to be a male and wanted her birth certificate changed, too. After the hearing, when it was finally real, when he called me, I don’t think I have ever heard my kid sound so happy. And he wanted the story told.

When I get home later this week, I will see someone officially named Jake Ralston for the first time. And one thing I know for certain: It will be love at first sight.

I want to be clear about my intentions on posting this. Jon Ralston has dealt with this family issue for a long time now. And, in sharing his son’s story, he’s helping countless families who find themselves in a similar circumstance.

I personally have friends who have found themselves unexpectedly learning about “life as transgender” from their children. This is real.

I celebrate Jon and Jake’s openness to sharing their story.

I congratulate Jake on his living life as the person he knows he is.

And send huge kudos to Jon for being the father any son would love to have.

UPDATE: The Washington Post’s Travis Andrews interviewed both Jon and Jake Ralston after Jon’s post went viral. Read more about Jake’s journey here.

Trans Model Laith Ashley covers ‘Attitude Magazine’

American model Laith Ashley becomes the first transgender model to cover ‘Attitude Magazine’ this month!

Laith also shares some of the challenges he faced learning to accept himself:

“I would self-destruct, I would disappear because I didn’t want to be here. For a long time I prayed to God to let me die. I’d think I hate life, hate being trans, hate the world. I was very negative. I still struggle with that from time to time but remind myself I’m pretty blessed. I have a family who [is] supportive. They may not agree with who I am, but they do love me. I had the privilege of going to school. I have the privilege of this experience. I love who I see in the mirror now.”

“People were really nasty for about three weeks. I just couldn’t stop reading the comments. I knew I shouldn’t have, but I kept reading and the more I read, the worse the comments got. I’ve learned that you can’t please everyone.”

Security Guard Charged After Assaulting/Ejecting Trans Woman From Grocery Store Bathroom

Ebony Belcher

From NBC Washington:

D.C. police have charged a security guard at a Giant grocery store with simple assault after a transgender woman said the guard forced her out of the women’s restroom.

Ebony Belcher, 32, said she went to the Giant in northeast D.C. with a friend to pick up a delivery from the Western Union.

While at the Giant, she asked a store employee to point her to the restroom and passed a female security officer standing in the hallway.

The officer came into the restroom and told her to get out, according to Belcher.

“She opened the door and came in and started calling me derogatory names,” Belcher said.

She said the officer put her hand on her shoulder and arm, grabbed her and pushed her out of the store.

Belcher said the guard told her, “You guys cannot keep coming in here and using our women’s restroom. They did not pass the law yet.”

She said she called police and reported the incident after she left the store. According to a police report, officers arrested the guard at the Giant after the confrontation.

And so it begins…

Hillary Clinton Sends Message Of Support To Trans Woman Attacked On New York City Subway

ABC News is reporting that Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton has sent a message of love and support to a transgender woman who was verbally and physically assaulted on a New York City subway last Thursday.

Hillary Clinton sent a message of support today to a transgender woman who recorded herself being verbally assaulted on the New York City subway last Thursday. Clinton, as it turns out, met the woman in mid-April at The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York.

The woman, Pearl Love, told ABC News this week she took the video last Thursday afternoon — and subsequently posted it on her Facebook page — while commuting to her new job as an outreach social worker for Translatina Network.

“I just sat down and started reading my book but then this woman across me just randomly started yelling profanities at me and saying racist things,” Love told ABC News. “I tried to just ignore it as I usually do, but this woman kept going for over five minutes. She was getting louder and more aggressive, so I started recording because I was scared.”

After hearing of the attack, Clinton posted the following on Love’s Facebook page:

Pearl, I’m so sorry that you experienced this. The all-too-high prevalence of violence and hatred faced by the transgender community — in 2016! —is a rebuke to all of us. Every single person deserves to be safe and live free from discrimination and cruelty, period. And transgender people need to hear from every one of us that you are loved, respected, and deserving of equality under the law. Know that you have my support, and I’m on your side.
