U.S. Senators Get Into Shouting Match Over Tax Cuts For The Wealthy

This was really quite the exchange yesterday between Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah.

During a Senate Finance Committee hearing last night, Brown accused Republicans of pushing a tax plan that provides a tax cut that’s “not really for the middle class, it’s for the rich.”

Brown clearly seems to have touched a nerve with the Republican.

Hatch, the committee chairman, quickly fired back at Brown, saying that he isn’t advocating for the rich but comes “from the poor people.”

“I’ve been here working my whole stinking career for people who don’t have a chance,” Hatch said. “And I really resent anybody who says I’m just doing this for the rich. Give me a break.”

“I think you guys just overplay that all the time and it gets old, frankly you ought to quit,” he continued. “I get kind of sick and tired of it. … It’s a nice political play, but it’s not true.”

Brown quickly responded, saying that he gets “sick and tired of the richest people in this country getting richer and richer.”

The two senators loudly talked over each other as they tried to regain control of the floor.

“Listen, I’ve honored you by allowing you to spout off here but what you said was not right, that’s all I’m saying,” Hatch said. “I come from the lower-middle class originally, we didn’t have anything. So don’t spew that stuff on me, I get real tired of that crap.”

Not surprisingly, the plan was advanced out of the committee by a party line vote of 14-12.

Sen. Sherrod Brown Proposes Senate Resolution Recognizing June As LGBTQ Pride Month

Ohio Senator Sharrod Brown shared the news today that, with no presidential proclamation acknowledging June as LGBT Pride Month, he has proposed the first-ever Senate Resolution for Pride Month.

This year, the White House broke with an 8 year tradition and did not issue a presidential proclamation acknowledging June as Pride Month.

So I’m proud to lead the first-ever Senate Resolution recognizing June as LGBTQ Pride Month.

And today, I’m equally proud that so many of my colleagues heartily agreed to cosponsor. An outpouring of support for the LGBTQ community.

We must always stand with our LGBTQ friends and neighbors – not just during the month of June, but year round. -SB

You may recall that while the White House didn’t find the time to issue an LGBTQ Pride Month proclamation, the folks there did name June as “National Homeownership Month”, “National Ocean Month”, “African-American Music Appreciation Month” and “Great Outdoors Month.”

Brown tagged an impressive 23 U.S. Senators along with his message as co-sponsors for the proposal.

Sen. Cory Booker Speaks from The Floor Of US Senate On The Story Of Jim Obergefell

Today, Senators Cory Booker and Sherrod Brown spoke on the floor of the US Senate sharing the story of SCOTUS plaintiff and longtime HRC Supporter Jim Obergefell.

“Jim and John’s story is moving, heartbreaking, inspiring, and unfortunately, all too common,” Sen. Booker said during his remarks on the Senate floor.

“Their story is about love conquering indifference and equality conquering inequality—but it is also about a larger question: whether our country will live up to the ideal of equality under the law it was founded under, or whether we will allow ourselves to be a land that denies some citizens fundamental rights while granting them to others, so, when we consider the rights of Jim Obergefell and John Arthur, we aren’t just talking about “gay rights.” We are talking about my rights. We are talking about your rights. We are talking about Constitutional rights. We are talking about human rights.”

Booker just rocks.
