President Obama Responds To Marriage Equality Ruling
Read Justice Kennedy’s Closing Line Making Same-Sex Marriage Legal
From the majority opinion making same-sex marriage the law of the land as written by Supreme Court Justice Kennedy:
No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death.
It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions.
They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.
The judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed.

SCOTUS Rules On Marriage Equality
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that the 14th Amendment DOES require states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples!!!!!!
The ruling effectively overturns gay marriage bans in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan.
I can imagine June 26th will be the unofficial Gay Rights Day from here on considering the decision today, the 2013 decision on the same date that struck down DOMA and the 2003 Lawrence v. Texas ruling that struck down sodomy laws.
From the ruling today:
“It is now clear that the challenged laws burden the liberty of same-sex couples, and it must be further acknowledged that they abridge central precepts of equality . . . Especially against a long history of disapproval of their relationships, this denial to same-sex couples of the right to marry works a grave and continuing harm. The imposition of this disability on gays and lesbians serves to disrespect and subordinate them. And the Equal Protection Clause, like the Due Process Clause, prohibits this unjustified infringement of the fundamental right to marry.”

Matt Baume: What Is The Definition Of “Traditional Marriage?”
Matt Baume breaks down the actual reality & definition(s) of so-called “traditional marriage.”
Traditional marriage isn’t the “one man, one woman” story you’ve always heard. It’s changed countless times over the last 4,000 years, almost always for the better.
Let’s take a look at all the different things that marriage has been, and the one thing that has remained constant about marriage over all those millennia.
Baume sums it up well like this: “Letting same-sex couples get married is actually completely traditional. It’s part of the tradition of constantly improving the institution of marriage.”

Mike Huckabee Promises To Block Same-Sex Marriage Recognition (If Elected)
Mike Huckabee said on conservative radio Monday that, if elected, he would block all federal recognition of same-sex marriage:
“Until the Congress of the United States puts on my desk a bill that basically defies the laws of nature and nature’s God and defies the longstanding tradition of marriage, the federal government will not recognize same-sex marriage because there is no law that requires it and that would be true for the military and it would be true for all federal institutions. If the Congress decides that they want to pass enabling legislation, they could put it on my desk and I would veto it, and they can attempt to override it. That’s the process. If liberals were subjected to a conservative court that forced them to tithe their income to scripture or forced them to go to church or forced them to believe something that they don’t want to believe, they would say, ‘We can’t do that, that would go against our conscience.’ And I would say, ‘You are exactly right and we can’t have such a ruling.’ This is why I find this very unsettling is because liberals will rue the day when the sword they use to enact their agenda is the sword of the court rather than to do it by way of the people’s elected representatives.”
Of course, the president doesn’t have the power to block recognition of legal marriages.
Also, an analogy of “forcing” liberals to tithe isn’t a fair comparison to marriage equality because same-sex marriage rights don’t MAKE conservatives get “gay married.” Marriage equality is just something conservatives hate; but it doesn’t make them do it. Forcing someone to give money to a church against their will is unconstitutional per the First Amendment.
More puffery for the right wing nuts.
